Powell: GOP has 'a dark vein of intolerance'
By GINGER GIBSON | 1/13/13 11:05 AM EST
While continuing to identify as a Republican, former Secretary of State Colin Powell on Sunday criticized the GOP for a series of racist attacks against President Barack Obama.
"There's also a dark vein of intolerance in some parts of the party," Powell said on NBC's "Meet the Press." "What do I mean by that? What I mean by that is they still sort of look down on minorities."
Powell, who endorsed Obama, pointed to a number of statements that were directed at Obama as evidence that there is still racism within the party.
"When I see a former governor say that the president is 'shuckin' and jivin'.' That's a racial-era slave term," Powell said, referring to former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin using the term to describe Obama's response to the attacks in Libya.
Powell also pointed to former New Hampshire Gov. John Sununu, who was an aggressive surrogate for Mitt Romney, for calling Obama "lazy" after the first debate during the campaign.
"He didn't say he was slow, he was tired, he didn't do well; he said he was 'lazy,'" Powell said "Now, it may not mean anything to most Americans, but to those of us who are African Americans, the second word is "shiftless," and then there's a third word that goes along with it."
Powell also eschewed the "birther movement."
"The whole birther movement: Why do senior Republican leaders tolerate this kind of discussion within the party?" Powell asked. "I think the party has to take a look at itself."

Colon should come out against raising the debt ceiling, to see where the intolerance is.
If you think about it, he only gets attention because he is of color and a rino. Otherwise, no one in the MSM would give a damn about him.
At this point, I really hate this horse’s ass. He has shown himself to be an unintelligent fool time and again. He’s being used and has no clue.
Oh, I don’t know about that. Former Secratary of State and Chairmen of the Joint Chiefs will probably get you press coverage no matter your ethnicity.
No Mr. Powell, the GOP condemns socialists and thugs. We do not get to pick the racial makeup of those two groups.
I prefer to think of it as principled as opposed to intolerance, General
The man doesn’t even remember his own history or life story. Sad. I feel so disconnected from my fellow black people.
The hypocrisy of the Democratic Party... think about it. Of course a liberal would argue otherwise, but those arguments are inconsequential in light that liberals do not have logic nor are liberals capable of objectivity.
According to this shiftless liberal any word in the dictionary can be racist so long as they say it is.
If you’re that sensitive maybe you ought to stay out of the public eye.
It wasn’t the republicans who were calling him a house negro when he was SOS.
Really Colin? Do you think that promoting infanticide and deviant sexual behavior is enlightened wisdom? Then why are democrats always trying to ban everything including the US constitution?
I remember Democrats I worked with in a supposed non-partisan election as being very ready to assert that the black candidate wasn’t “ready” and we conservatives had to push him through.
He is now a Congressman. He never would have achieved that democrat seat without his earlier success.
Or Marco Rubio ?
Hey Colon!
There’s nothing less significant than skin color (Hell my face gets darker than yours in the Summertime)
What I hate is your dark side.
Colin enjoys the liberal cocktail circuit over the conservative one. Comments like this insures the invitatons will keep on coming.
I got news for ya, there are “intolerant” ones on both sides.
I’m intolerant of race-baiting liars and con artists who seek to steal my rights and freedoms.
Perhaps, but then again, I forget the last former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs to be interviewed regarding politics. They might interview Condelezza, but usually to attack her. Oh, they’ll talk to Albright, but she is dumb as a rock anyway and a rat to boot. No, he is their useful idiot and that’s the role he loves.
