Dick Armey had no idea he was speaking to the left-wing Media Matters organization during an interview last week, he told The Daily Caller Tuesday. Instead, Armey thought he was chatting with the conservative Media Research Center.
Armey and his tea party organization FreedomWorks parted ways in early December after disagreements over the direction of the powerful nonprofit and how the groups money was being spent.
A post published Friday by Media Matters blogger Joe Strupp relayed concerns by Armey also a former House majority leader about FreedomWorks expenditures, including several million dollars spent on sponsorship opportunities with radio hosts Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck.
In that interview, Armey described his disagreement with FreedomWorks decision to advertise on those shows. He said he would have preferred spending the money to recruit activists and inform activists and to encourage and enthuse activists, something Armey didnt feel was accomplished through robust radio advertising.
Over the weekend, conservative reaction to Armeys decision to dish to Media Matters about his tumultuous exit from FreedomWorks ranged from befuddled to furious.
If Dick Armey is going to go to Media Matters, hes willing to burn down the movement over his vendetta, Red State blogger Erick Erickson wrote on Twitter.
This is disgraceful, Jim Hoft wrote on his blog, The Gateway Pundit. The former FreedomWorks chairman did not approve of the way the conservative group was working with Glenn Beck to push conservative causes. So, he went to the most sinister far left outlet on the planet to rip on FreedomWorks. He must have lost his mind.
But in a Tuesday phone interview with TheDC, Armey insisted that even though Strupp properly identified himself, it wasnt until somebody busted my chops on Facebook that he realized he spoke to a left-wing group.

like paying consultants millions?
DICK ARMEY. Oh, I get it!!!!
Personally, I could care less what Dick Armey does anymore. He is not relevant to anything or anyone, other than the suckers who give him money.
I dont fault him too much,
the R party does have some good messages (economic growth and opportunities, jobs for people... instead of the steady destruction of our economy by the Occupancy in the WH)
etc.
These good messages do have to get OUT THERE if a good candidate is every to win in future.
This means going into the parts of town that R candidates often ignore or avoid. This also means going on some of the radical, antiAmerican media outlets.... and slogging it out as best possible there.
Again, there are some good messages that need to get communicated ... to as many voters as possible! Even if we pick up only 10 percent of the “difficult” votes, it could swing the next election in a positive direction!
Ignore large numbers of voters at our own peril!!!!!
(Like, we just saw happen....)
It will be a difficult job but just visiting friendly crowds will NOT win many elections!!! We need candidates (yes, like Reagan) who are not afraid of reaching out to a much wider spectrum of voters.... notice I did not say water down the core message or values.... but yes honestly reach out and communicate the good points, the things that can attract some new votes for our positions....especially.
again, even 10 percent of the opposition votes will, can, may swing the next election if we nominate candidates that will actually campaign for the votes we need!
As a former House Majority Leader, is Armey's behavior indicative of how clued in the current Republican leadership is on these organizations?
Media Matters was launched by John Podesta. Doesn't Armey know who these people are and what they're doing when they're not partying with each other after dark?
As the head of FreedomWorks, doesn't he know who his opposition is?

If he isn’t getting senile, he better know the difference. I am not buying his “mistake”. As someone said on the comments, was it also a mistake to leak to Mother Jones?
I see how he got confused...”Media Matters” sounds almost like “Media Research Center”. Either this freak needs better hearing aids or he is a few cards short of a full deck. ...and these are “leaders”????????
Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight! “I just screwed up on the verbiage.”
Dammit, who let him out without his watcher?
