Obama can’t ignore the debt ceiling unless Congress lets him. If he tries, the House can simply “zero out” the budgets for every cabinet level department except Defense and let Obama explain to his supporters why their Federal jobs are going away. The Left was deathly afraid Newt Gingrich was going to do this back in early 2005.

But, of course, if a few Republicans defect and the Democrats vote for continued spending, then the GOP will lose. The only hope would be if Boehner refused to bring up spending bills for a vote. But then remember that Boehner just got rid of some conservatives from key committees.
