It is actually quite true that HIV initially made substantial progress in central Africa because of war, which led to prostitution, and then lots and lots of HIV. It was found to have been in rural villages there for many decades but the huge spinoff event for it to go global and rampant were the migrations of large numbers of people and prostitutes along the routes.

The logic from some reports is that there is an old voodoo belief that a man could rid himself of a venereal disease by giving it to a disease free female (or even baby). Disgusting, of course. But it should not be ignored. The actual demographic facts are that homo activity is much more frequent with respect to heterosexual activity in the US than in other places, even those who have rolled over and instituted “gay marriage.” In France it’s a bragging point to have mistresses. In US it’s tolerated but not yet flaunted.
