Yup, a lot of people don't want to hear that though. The public is not with us right now. They want spending cuts in theory, but will howl in rage if you actually cut anything beyond maybe prisons and foreign aid. America is simply following in Europe's footsteps. Republicans will mostly kick the can because, in the end, there just isn't much support from the public for any tough decisions and votes.
Poll after poll tells us that Americans want spending cuts. Problem is, we all want spending cuts to programs that other people use. And I'm just as guilty as the rest. Cut welfare, medicaid, SSD and food stamps but don't you dare touch my refundable Child Tax Credit! That's how I pay my Christmas credit card bills off each year! (And I'm sure others here feel the same way but they won't admit it. Of course, if their children are grown, they're perfectly happy to have my CTC taken away as long as their prescription drug benefits aren't touched. And on and on...)
Nobody wants their own ox to get gored and Santa wants to give presents to everyone. It's really as simple as that.
