I think it’s more basic than that. I think there are a lot of Americans of a generation younger than mine who grew up never knowing about the colonial history of South Africa, and have no idea that a significant minority of the population there is white.

Yep and they've probably never heard of Apartheid. Also, it's unlikely they know who Nelson Mandela is.

Her parents are white? That aside, an American couple of Scottish ancestry were stationed in South Africa when the fraternal twin children were born. Classic red haired, blue eyed Scots. At college they tried to join an African American club on campus. They were the only authentic African Americans in the room. The rest were black Americans with possible distant African ancestry. They were rejected for insufficient melanin.

I didn’t realize there was a racial requirement. Seems racist to question her race. Is she in any way unqualified? Seems more than attractive enough to have a shot at winning. Id think anyone would be happy to have her representing their country.

Afrikaners (descended from Dutch Settlers in the Cape Colony) is now 10% or so.

black African 79%, white 9.6%, colored 8.9%, Indian/Asian 2.5% (2001 census)

She could be "colored". They vary across a wide spectrum, as would be expected.
