In 1919 they were having difficulty convincing the allies to not carve Anatolia up into little piece with the USA getting a seriously large chunk of the place.

So, they were going to protect Jews then?

Remember, for a variety of reasons going back hundreds of years the European powers had decided to eliminate the 'sick man of Europe', aka the Ottoman Empire.
