Sam Swicegood, a Pizza Hut delivery man in Maryland fought off a group of attackers as he was attempting to deliver pizzas, and what happens? Pizza Hut gave him a demotion.
According to Swicegood, he was sucker punched, which caused his glasses to “fly off.” He then dropped the pizzas he was carrying and began to swing a small piece of a tent pole he had at his attackers, while covering his face. Its a little fiberglass road I had up my sleeve not thinking I would actually have to use it but more or less having a little comfort up my sleeve, recalled Sam.
Swicegood faced five attackers and said those odds “is just not a good situation to be in.”
He said, “I thought I was about to die.”
The attackers fled without his money or his pizzas. However, Fox News Insider says that Pizza Hut cut his hours and his pay for violating their “no weapons policy.”
The local Fox affiliate in Baltimore reported, “During the days that followed Pizza Hut made Sam a cook, slashing his hours and salary. Sam had violated Pizza Huts weapon policy which states that a driver cannot be armed.”
Swicegood is college student simply trying to make ends meet delivering pizzas. He said, I was making about 11 or 12 dollars in tips, which helped pay for college.
Sam said,
Im not saying we should arm all delivery drivers, but Im saying that punishing delivery drivers for defending themselves as theyre being attacked is unjust.
It is unjust.
In November, one of Sam’s co-workers was held at gunpoint and robbed in the same area that Swicegood was attacked. So far 3 of the 5 individuals that attacked Swicegood have been arrest. They are all juveniles.
Not that I’m a fan of Pizza Hut, but I’ll take my business elsewhere when I’m purchasing pizzas from now on until they make this right. After all, Sam and people like him are performing a job for them and in these cases they are doing it by putting their lives on the line, literally. This is just one more area where if the company wants to exercise the right to disarm their employees they should be able to also be sued if the employee is attacked for the company’s failure to provide adequate protection. Otherwise, allow people to exercise their Second Amendment rights.
Maryland - the state where a fiberglass tent pole is considered a weapon, and a handgun would have landed the victim in prison.
I think it was meant to be “rod.”
Boycott Pizza Hut until they restore his position. Do NOT go there to eat. Call them and tell them why. If we do not begin to act, then the company is going to keep doing this.
“I’ll bet there are a lot of muggers...”
That is exactly what crossed my mind. Pizza Hut has essentially granted “open season” on all of its drivers. Want some easy cash? Rob the pizza delivery person who isn’t allowed to even fight back. It is shameful.
OK, just so I get this straight.......he defended himself from thugs that might have killed or maimed him. So Pizza Hut’s thinking is let them kill or maim you to save our sorry skin from a lawsuit because one of our employees’ defended himself with a fiberglass rod? OK, I think I get it now......and I will NEVER eat another Pizza Hut pizza for the rest of my life. Incredible!
Get enough of those pizza delivery guys demoted and the sorry a$$ed manager will have to deliver them.
It appears many posters fail to read the article.
Agreed. Journalist’s. Lol.
This happened in Baltimore. Baltimore is a real hellhole.
Maryland is a one party Democrat state and Baltimore is a one party Democrat city. Gun control laws are extremely strict. Criminals are armed and dangerous. Citizens who defend themselves are subject to criminal charges.
Companies in Maryland are liable if any of their employees ever defend themselves. That is the same for individuals in Maryland. The criminal is always right. He is a victim of society. The citizen defending himself is always wrong.
This will be the case throughout the country soon. Get used to it.
I don’t go there anymore anyway, I think they may have quit using real cheese a few years ago or at least made a big change, they just don’t taste good to me anymore.
He’s not the first employee they’ve treated like this.
Yo, Pizza Hut, you just lost a customer.
“There are two sides to every story and his lacks credibility.”
This is why I always pick-up my pizzas. The delivery men are always plotting and scheming.

Word of mouth is the best advertisement!
Papa John’s pizza is TONS better!
So is Papa Murpheys, even if you do have to bake it yourself at home.
OK, how does it lack credibility?
This kind of crapola just burns me up to no end.
They reduced civil liability for individuals in 2010 - an election year, by some coinky-dink (wink wink).
None of the chain's pizzas taste good to me any more. I really believe it's because they started a long time ago on "cost savings" ideas such as, "Let's omit two pepperoni slices per pizza, while at the same time raise the price slightly and we'll save x amount of dollars every year".
Hey, since that worked so well, let's use an ounce less of sauce and an ounce less of cheese too, a year or two later, do the same thing all over again.
Resulting in today's chain pizza that's a thinly covered piece of card board tasting crust.
In my opinion, Papa Murphy's is a cut above the rest of the lot, not cheap and you do have to bake it yourself but not too bad for a "store bought" pizza. I still like the pizza I make myself better though.
P.S. I do not ever buy pizza with pepperoni on it, since manufacturers figured out how to make it out of "mechanically separated" turkey and/or chicken, instead of pork. I detest poultry and buy my pepperoni separately. They make it from birds for one reason, birds are cheaper than hogs.
Local Pizza Hut doesn’t deliver - the manager’s actually know better. We’ve got some pretty rough ‘hoods around here, even as rural as we are.
With that said - the Food Lion store’s own brand frozen pizza is far superior to anything coming out of PH - and it’s a heck of a lot cheaper!
Doesn’t it just figure that Nancy Pelosi is from Baltimore and her father was mayor?
