A week ago on NBCs Meet the Press, David Gregory brandished on screen a high-capacity magazine. To most media experts, a high-capacity magazine means an ad-stuffed double issue of Vanity Fair with the triple-page perfume-scented pullouts. But apparently in Americas gun-nut gun culture of gun-crazed gun kooks, its something else entirely, and it was this latter kind that Mr. Gregory produced in order to taunt Wayne LaPierre of the NRA. As the poster child for Americas gun-crazed gun-kook gun culture, Mr. LaPierre would probably have been more scared by the host waving around a headily perfumed Vanity Fair. But that was merely NBCs first miscalculation. It seems a high-capacity magazine is illegal in the District of Columbia, and the flagrant breach of D.C. gun laws is now under investigation by the police.
This is, declared NYU professor Jay Rosen, the dumbest media story of 2012. Why? Because, as CNNs Howard Kurtz breezily put it, everybody knows David Gregory wasnt planning to commit any crimes.

Hi Alfred, I was just reading your post on the difference between unalienable and inalienable. I found it quite interesting.
I was also reading an article about President Obama omitting Creator when quoting the Declaration (http://www.wnd.com/index.phpfa=PAGE.view&pageId=237349) when I noticed that he repeatedly uses inalienable. The omission of the one word and the incorrect usage of the other in numerous instances can only be intentional. Hes very consistent about it. I was curious about your thoughts on this.

In the context of American history, the terms Creator and unalienable Rights appear first and most famously in our Declaration of Independence of July 4th, A.D. 1776. There, in its second sentence, theDeclaration offers the single most radical statement of truth in at least 2,000 years of Western political thought:
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.
Prior to our Declaration, the nations of the western world were governed by monarchies where only one manthe kingwas deemed to be sovereign. The king was sovereign because he, and he alone, was deemed to have been directly endowed by the God of the Bible (the earthly kings Creator) with the divine right of kings. That endowment of God-given rights did not attach as a result of an election or human appointment. That endowment attached as the result of a coronation ceremony that took place in the highest church within the nation.
The king would wear a crown of gold and jewels which was intended to symbolize the glittering corona seen around the heads of the Christ and saints in medieval paintings. The crown didnt simply represent the kings secular or political authority; it represented his spiritual authority. Because the king, and only the king, got his rights directly from God, the king had a special spiritual status (sovereignty) that no other man living in that kingdom could match.
We can see some confirmation of these observations in the rules of chess and the design of classic chess pieces. In the classic chess piece design, the king alone has a cross on the top of his crown. That cross symbolizes that the king is directly endowed by his Creator with the divine right of kings and is therefore sovereign.
Under the rules of chess, you can kill (remove from the chess board of life) all of the other pieces. If an opponent lands on a pawn, knight, bishop, rook or queen, that piece is effectively killed and removed from the board. But the opponent can never kill the king. You can checkmate the king by putting him in circumstances where he is both threatened with death and unable to move to another, safer location. You can even accidentally put the king in a circumstance where he is not in check (being directly threatened) but cant move without moving into check (death).
The king, and king alone, had the divine right of kingswhich included an unalienable Right to Life. You could capture a chess king, but you could never, never, lawfully kill him.

The argument for letting him walk rests on his membership of a protected class the media. Notwithstanding that (per Gallup) 54 percent of Americans have a favorable opinion of the NRA while only 40 percent have any trust in the media, the latter regard themselves as part of the ruling class.. . . which is precisely my point when I say that journalists do not respect the First Amendment as it relates to anyone outside their club.
And their club is defined by going along and getting along with the consensus of what is convenient for journalism as such. Which is how stories such as the Trayvon Martin case get fit into the standard "white-American-him-bad template.

But, even if were denied that pleasure, the dumbest media story of 2012 is actually rather instructive. David Gregory intended to demonstrate what he regards as the absurdity of Americas lax gun laws. Instead, hes demonstrating the ever greater absurdity of Americas non-lax laws. His investigation, prosecution, and a sentence of 2030 years with eligibility for parole after ten (assuming Mothers Against High-Capacity Magazines dont object) would teach a far more useful lesson than whatever he thought he was doing by waving that clip under LaPierres nose.

We need to get someone with integrity----like Cong Allen West (not reelected)----- to write letters to his colleagues, and to the media.
Cong West needs to do the following:
(1) decry the agitation and intimidation tactics being used by these groups,
(2) expose using hatemongering for personal gain,
(3) emphasize the illegalities WRT threatening members of the US Congress,
(4) precpitate investigations into fraud and intimidation upon our electoral/legislative system by these hate-mongering groups, and,
(5) determine the scope and dimension of subversion these activities are visiting on US ntl security.
Should David Gregory be treated more leniently than a domestic cat just because when Obama tickles his tummy he licks the presidents hand and purrs contentedly?
In any future gun, law, Conservatives should insist on a “Gregory Exemption”... prosecutors have to demand that prove intention of an evil act beyond possession.
Seems simple enough...

Journalists use to be talented working class people who were in touch with real people. Not anymore - which is why no one gives a damn about 'the news' as presented by CNN. Or about CNN - or any of the rest of the 'oh so superior (by their own standards) newsies.
Gregory is not alone in his Lawlessness.
Odds are a Program Producer procured the Magazine, the Director was advised of the stunt, making him an accessory and Gregory did the deed. Looks like we can include a Conspiracy Charge as well as Possession.
Now, we must assume that the Magazine was transported from a “legal” location to the “illegal location”, which would require transport over State Lines resulting in Federal Charges, not just local D.C. Charges.
It’s time to cast a wide net and get all these Scofflaws off the street to protect the Children.
