I remember Paderewski's performance of Chopin's Ballade in A-flat from the Welte recording, where he rolled every chord. It was Rachmaninov and a number of other pianists of the early 20th Century who put an end to taking such liberties with the composer's score.

The Welte recordings show how things were done in the old days.
