I've heard stories of people cutting down trees with an M16 on full auto. Any truth to that rumor?
If a person were persistent and had an awful lot of rounds to blow (or a really small tree), they could cut a tree. But a 5.56 round is the same size as a .223 caliber which is just .003 larger in diameter than a .22LR round.
I believe the spec ops miniguns mounted on AH6’s fire 5.56, and I’ve no doubt they could cut down a tree, but that thing puts out thousands of rounds really quick.
Any of the 7.76 weapons on full auto could get around to it and is a good reason for really understanding the difference between cover and concealment.
Mythbusters tried it.
Couldn’t do it with an M16 but easily took care of things with a minigun, 3000 rounds a minute.
