The internal battle for the direction of the Republican Party has enveloped Washingtons GOP consultant class, as pragmatic party strategists hired to win campaigns ponder how to reclaim control of the primary process from powerful conservative activist groups.
This developing conflict comes in the aftermath of consecutive election cycles that saw Republicans blow as many as five Senate races because the party nominated flawed candidates over those who were better suited to compete in the general election.
Some of these losing 2010 and 2012 nominees received crucial support from Washington-based tea party groups that made their primary campaigns viable. GOP consultants who found themselves on the losing end are considering the formation of outside groups of their own to counter these organizations and boost their favored candidates in the 2014 primaries.
The bigger the office, the brighter the spotlight, and it is difficult, if not impossible, to elect a lousy candidate over a good candidate in any [general election] Senate race, regardless of ideology, said a Republican strategist who is frustrated with the hold that conservative groups like the Club for Growth, FreedomWorks and the Senate Conservatives Fund have had on the GOP primary process in recent elections.
Unlike these tea-party-affiliated groups, this Republican strategist and others who think similarly (prioritizing winning over ideological purity) argue that a Republican will always be more conservative than a Democrat and the partys objective should be to control the White House and Congress so it can set the governing agenda and prevent Democrats from enacting laws like the Affordable Care Act.
In quiet postmortem sessions, these strategists are exploring ways to influence primaries and curb the power of the tea party groups.

The truth is this. I am not going to compromise my principles any more for the rino loser republican party.
I don't hate you because you want to support rinos, but I have made up my mind not to ever support them again because they are proven losers.
My alarm clock works just fine, thank you!
As my sainted grandmother used to say, "Some folks just ain't happy 'less they're bitching."
You will lose perpetually and do nothing in the process to stop the likes of Obama. You are enabling Obama and RATs and they thank you, and those like you.
We've a far better chance of defeating the rinos than we have of attending the inauguration of the first President nominated by the Constitution Party.
But, if it scratches your itch, go ahead and bail.
Praying for you, old friend.
I can go on and on about these nutcases and the fools who actually believe their lies but I'm kind of sick of everyone who is not willing to actually do something about helping fix the problem we're in right now and withdrawing from the process doesn't help anyone, except Democrats.
"Contempt" is a good word -- applies to most of these splinter groups.
Then I realized that if these people really cared about their country, they'd be fighting in the Republican party and strengthening it but they don't care about that. They only care about getting schmucks to worship them. Stop and think about it, if these kooks were serious about getting elected to office, they'd be running as Republicans and some would already be in office. They don't want to win, then they'd be subject to the same scrutiny as other Republicans who had the guts to take risks.
See my post no. 68, this applies to you, too and those who were stupid enough to believe that you were worthy of their vote. You kooks all helped elect Obama—thanks a lot. You knew you were helping elect Obama but you didn’t care—your ego was far more important to you.
I’ll continue to pray for you, old friend.
First, you ran for US senate, which got you no where, then it was state rep., then it was president.
You will never be a state rep, a US senator or president of the US so it's time to accept it and move on.
You mean unlike the GOP/RNC/Republicans haven't lost and stopped Obama?
My loss is somehow greater because I'm not going to support rinos any more who have no principles or value conservative precepts?
The republican party are liberal coddlers and I want NOTHING to do with them!
I don't GAS about another party! You're not grasping the concept. Conservatives do not have the political gumption to defeat rino's from within the party because we are not gov't zealots.
Conservatives have a far better chance of gaining some control standing on conservative principals and defeating rinos from a hill than we do right in the middle of the valley where rinos are surrounding us!
rinos have to be overcome first before conservatives have any chance of effective change and that will not happen within the Stupid Party!
