I’m assuming this wouldn’t stop inheritance transfers since nobody is buying anything.

I don’t know anyone who doesn’t go through background checks when they buy a gun.

It took me a minute, but this is a code word, or a dog whistle if you will, that would prohibit private sales of guns. California currently has a law like this: it’s illegal for Sally to simply buy a gun from Fred. They have to agree on a price, and Fred has to take the gun to a licensed dealer. Then, Sally goes to that dealer, pays her $40 fee, fills out a 4470, goes through the NICS check and then her waiting period starts. Ten days later she can go pick up her gun.

Oh, and along the way, California registeres the gun.

So, they’re really talking about doing two things:

1. Banning private sales and;
2. Creating a national registry.

Don’t be fooled. Don’t let them get away with this. Call them out.
