Senator Dianne Feinstein's ghoulish eagerness to exploit the tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut for political gain is reminiscent of stock horror movie villains who need and crave the blood of innocents for their unholy agendas. Feinstein's agenda is an "assault weapon" ban, and it needs to be shut down before it gets started.
Suppose that Feinstein had somehow been able to make all magazines larger than 10 rounds disappear overnight. Mass murderer Adam Lanza would have had to switch magazines more frequently but, as he was the only armed person present in the school, he could have done that at his leisure. The only armed person present could, in fact, have wreaked considerable havoc with only a knife or an axe. The phrase "the only armed person present" indicates the only rational solution to the problem in question, as does the fact that Lanza turned his gun on himself only when the arrival of other armed people (police) changed his situation to his disadvantage. This reinforces the lesson that, when seconds count, the police are only minutes away.

One thing that might help is changin current “lockdown” procedures. Why would you think that having a bunch of kids huddled in a closet is a good thing?!?!?
There should be a door or stairway to the outside on every classroom. Once the teacher knows the threat is inside the school building (not outside), everyone makes a run for it.

Exactly! And, that's my point. Impeachmemnt is a political process, NOT a legal one.
Without an easier method of recalling a sitting president by the voters and taxpayers (such as initiative and referendum), Congressional power to impeach is pointless, ESPECIALLY with the political divide we have in America today.
I've ranted about this before. Our political system is irreparably broken as the result of the tinkering and toying with the rules laid out in the Constitution by the Congress. What we have today no longer represents what the Founding Fathers created. That's why it is so corrupt and unable to attend to the business of America.
IMO, Congress should meet for ONLY 5 months once every two years to pass a budget. Since they have nothing else to do but symbolism over substance, they can GO HOME and do whatever they think is necessary from their home. If the president needs them back in session, he can call them back into session, just like a governor calls the legislature into emergency session in the event of something unexpected.
Enough is enough!! We can no longer afford to have these ne'er do well thieves on the public dole year in and year out accomplishing nothing but more trouble, taxes and spending Americans and future Americans don't need!!
(grinning sheepishly and stepping down from my soapbox) Thank you for your attention. Sorry about the rant.

If the voters recall the president, we can use the legal system to obtain a conviction if the evidence supports it.

First of all, the Senate no longer represents the state governments, but the people of the states - quite a different thing. Second, the senators are legislators rather than executives - thus, they are poor choices for a jury of his peers for the POTUS.IMHO it would be better if the governors of the several states were the jury rather than the Senate, because the issue of what constitutes an impeachable offense should be judged by people who have the same role - executives. I wonder how many governors, even Democrats, would have been comfortable going on record that lying to a judge in a civil case was something that they were willing to have it thought by their constituents that they themselves would consider justified if they were in the dock?
However, it is painfully obvious that - certainly under the present dispensation - no Democrat POTUS will ever be convicted of an impeachment. It was fine for Nixon, but he was a Republican. It would be different if journalists were anything other than non-card-carrying Democrats, but we all know that that is exactly what they are. Their nominal role is to inform the public, but their real role is to distract the voting public from issues which are inconvenient to Democrats. But that situation did not arise only in this election year; it was in full bloom when Joe McCarthy was laughed down for telling the truth about communists in the federal government.
Indeed, my analysis of the dynamics of wire service journalism - and my reading of
leads to the conclusion that the same mechanism was in full operation by the 1920s.
