I’d be pretty sure that nobody was expected to be defenseless,except slaves and sub-human minorities, during the first century of our republic’s existence. Unilateral disarmament is a recent invention.
Point taken but children are a special group. They are completely defenseless no matter what group their parents fall into.
Imagine what our Founders would say and do if told that teachers today are PROHIBITED from keeping and bearing arms while charged with the welfare of our children. They would predict just the sort of depredations that have taken place. The tar and feathers would be prepared.
