The Left isn't that smart or devious on the whole and they have a lot of unhinged morons on the fringes. The more the politicians rachet-up their rhetoric, the more likely it is one of these loons will act. Then, the blowback begins.

And that is the time (blowback) when the more devious on the Left strike a conciliatory tone, saying in effect:
"Now, now, I know we have been agitating one group against the other for decades, in order to enact laws which enrich ourselves at the expense of those we demonize and those dumb enough to follow our rhetoric. But now that it looks like a large number of you are about to march and hang me from a lamp post and hold me accountable for my actions, can't we all just get along?"

Or said devious types get so frightened they decide to throw a match (think Assad in Syria).
