Sen. Mark Warner seeks gun control action in wake of mass shooting

Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.) has an A rating from the National Rifle Association — and a new perspective on gun control since Friday’s mass shooting at a Connecticut elementary school.

“I‘ve been a strong supporter of Second Amendment rights,” Warner said Monday outside the Virginia Capitol, where he was attending an unrelated meeting. “I’ve got an A rating from the NRA. But the status quo isn’t acceptable. I’ve got three daughters. They asked me on Friday evening, ‘Dad, what are you gonna do about this?’ There’s got to be a way to put reasonable restrictions, particularly as we look at assault weapons, as we look at these fast clips of ammunition.”

Warner said his resolve to pursue a solution solidified over the weekend while attending a Washington Wizards game. Many people approached him to talk about the tragedy, in which a gunman with a military-style rifle killed 20 first-graders and seven adults.

“I must have had a half-dozen people come up — Colin Powell actually,” Warner said. “People were just coming up and saying, ‘Hey, we’ve got to [do something].’”

Warner declined to elaborate on what Powell, the former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and former secretary of state, had said.

Warner said he hoped that the massacre would serve as a “game changer” on guns, as he put it in a tweet.

“I hope and pray that this won’t just be a flashpoint and then recede into the quagmire of legislative non-function in Washington,” he said. “But I think you’re gonna see — at least I hope — there are an awful lot of folks who, like myself, who’ve got an A rating from the NRA that are willing to say, ‘Enough.’

It’s like blaming the car for the car wreck, outlawing the car driven by the crazy person, rather than dealing with the problem - the driver.

We'll see how long you keep it.

Mark, why not take action against the psychopaths walking freely among us?

His answer to his daughters should have been “ I am going to fight to give everyone the right to be armed anytime and anywhere so they can defend themselves and their families.” That is the answer to how these crazies can be stopped. These massacres won’t be stopped by curbing the rights of sane law abiding citizens, because the truly disturbed will always find a way to kill. They will do it with a car or blade or bomb or arson, they will not be stopped by laws or reason.

The American Revolution began when the British tried to disarm the Colonists. (In Mass of all places!!!)

It’s only fitting that the American Revolution ends with the Colonists demanding to be disarmed.

You’ve come a LONG way baby. :D

Why is it that these Liberal Politicians (they used to call themselves that) are always ready to err on the side of less freedom instead of more?

I think that they don’t understand what the term ‘liberal’ really means. Of course they don’t like to be called Liberal anymore because the term has become derogatory in common use. Well at least they have finally become truthful in their real feelings about liberty.

Hey, we’ve got to [do something].

Lock up the insane, but we got a legal system that favors the rights of the insane over the safety of the people.

So do something about that.

How old are Mark’s daughters, and where do they attend school? Do they attend private schools with armed guards at the gate and fortresses so that a sniper would have difficulty picking off children as they play on the playground?

Where do the Obama girls go to school, and how many armed guards do they have? How many guards does their school have without a president’s child in attendance?

If a student came to school with a loaded weapon at one of the elites’ private schools, what would happen to that child? House arrest? That is what has happened to a student at a local high school here.

Our founders knew that the citizen had the right to bear arms against the British soldier. This tells me that the citizen must be armed sufficiently against the weapons technology of a military threat. “That the right of the citizens to bear arms in defense of themselves and the state shall not be questioned.”

In Colonial times, “arms” were taken any weapon that could be carried. Such arms were a different thing than tanks, cannons and surface to surface missiles with warheads. Such had another name. They were called “ordinance.” These are not constitutionally protect. However, anything that can be carried is protected. A citizen needs to protect himself from a military tyranny foreign or domestic (or a threat from another planet).
