Somehow, since about 2009 or so, this country seems to have really descended into a maelstrom of racial hatred. It’s open season on everybody, and no one is holding back or making apologies.
I wonder what changed?

Nothing “changed” except that they now feel emboldened by 0 being in power and are simply openly stating what they’ve always secretly thought.
In 2008, the day after the ‘election’, the local yutes were terrorizing shoppers at the local WalMart strip mall by yelling them “We in power now, bitches!” and other lovely ‘payback’ sentiments.
It’s only gotten worse since that day.
