Breaking: Nikki Haley to pick Tim Scott to replace DeMint in Senate
Hotair ^ | 12/17/2012 | Ed Morrissey

Welcome, my friends, to the least surprising political news of the week. Nikki Haley will appoint Rep. Tim Scott to replace Senator Jim DeMint in the US Senate, making Scott the upper chamber's only African-American member, and give him a boost in the 2014 special election for the rest of DeMint's term:

Multiple media sources are reporting that South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley will indeed name Rep. Tim Scott to be the next senator from South Carolina.

Scott will serve for two years, and then presumably run in a special election in 2014. If reelected, he would serve an additional two years (the remaining two years of the six-year term Jim DeMint was elected to in 2010) and then potentially run again for a full-six year term in 2016.

Also from Brother Jim at NRO comes this piece of ironic trivia:

Tim Scott beat Strom Thurmond’s son in the 2010 House primary. Now he will sit in the seat Thurmond once occupied. bit.ly/T2mv3t

The Charlotte Observer picked up the story a few minutes ago as well:

U.S. Rep. Tim Scott, who overcame poverty in North Charleston to build a successful business and political career, will be appointed today by Gov. Nikki Haley to the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Republican Jim DeMint, The New York Times and CNN reported this morning.

Haley has scheduled a noon news conference to announce her pick. DeMint and U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham, a Republican from Seneca, are scheduled to attend.

That makes a lot of sense; DeMint reportedly went to bat for Scott as his replacement, and he’s likely to cheer the decision as the new head of the Heritage Foundation. His blessing will be seen as an important key for Haley.

That means that Haley will have to call a special election for Scott’s soon-to-be vacant seat. The election will have to be held in 18 weeks, with a primary in 11 weeks. Can SC-01 produce another clear conservative to replace Scott? We will soon find out. Regardless, this is a great choice for Haley, even if it was the only obvious choice.

Too bad Col Allen West is not from SC. I’d pick him over Scott any day of the week. With that said, Scott is a solid conservative. But Scott is not the firebreather that West is. Don’t know if I have ever heard Scott criticize the communist. It’s a crying damn shame that the GOP didn’t back up West when the election was stolen from him in Florida.

RE: The night he was elected, he talked openly and proudly about how frequently his mother came barreling into him with *her* spikes vengefully high.

Wouldn’t that be considered child abuse nowadays and grounds for taking him out of his mother’s custody?

RE: He should formally start a Senate Black Caucus.

Who’s he going to be caucusing with in the Senate?

Maybe he can start a Black-Native American caucus and invite Elizabeth Warren :)

RE: U.S. Rep. Tim Scott, who overcame poverty in North Charleston to build a successful business and political career...

He was into REAL ESTATE, INSURANCE and FINANCIAL ADVISE as I understand. I expect opposition research starting right now as to whether he made any money out of subprime mortgages in his portfolio...

RE: West may have done him the favor of drawing the Left’s fire over the past two years, while Scott sort of stayed under the radar.

Absolutely. He might be the biggest single threat to the Democratic Party right now. I bet he stays with the understated, low-profile approach though. He doesn’t strike me as the type to run out in front of every camera he sees.

I’ve met Tim Scott a couple of times. He is/was my Congressman. He is a good man who will do South Carolina proud. Good job, Nikki.

“Scott is in a conservative district. Which means he could do what he wanted. He’s just naturally less bombastic.”

I agree with you, he’s not as in-your-face as Congressman West, but no less conservative. (Actually, Congressman West’s more bombastic nature sometimes resulted in him saying things that pissed off people on our side as well, such as when he was quick to condemn George Zimmerman for the Trayvon Martin shooting before all the facts were known.)

It’s also true, though, that liberals didn’t see as much upside in trying to bait Congressman Scott, whom they had almost no chance of defeating, while they knew that they could beat West if he spoke out enough in his slightly Democrat-leaning CD (or, it turns out, in the slightly Republican-leaning CD to which he moved for the 2012 election).

I like her a lot, but she will be hated by some here on FR because she...wait for it....endorsed Mitt Romney.

“It’s his RECORD that counts”

Of course. But isn’t it interesting that some of the very best conservatives and conservative thinkers are Black ?

Clarence Thomas, Thomas Sowell, Walter Williams, Shelby Steele, Allen West, Mia Love, Tim Scott, Herman Cain, Alan Keyes, Janice Rogers Brown, Jesse Lee Peterson, Ken Hamblin, Star Parker, Amy Holmes, Ward Connerly, Charles Payne, Daneen Borelli, Alveda King, Robert A. George, Angela McGlowan, and of course Tony Dungy and ( 50 cent?) .

And the corollary to that would obviously be isn’t it amazing how incredibly stupid, vapid, corrupt and demogogic Blacks in the demonrat party are? Sorry not enough FR bandwidth to compile a list.

But I got to give honorable mention to Sheila Jackson Lee
( entitlements are earned and Hank Johnson ( Guam tipping over) and any and all with the surname Jackson, Sharpton, Conyers, Rangel, . . . oh o bandwidth warning . . .

He is 47 and unmarried? I don’t like that at all. Has he ever been married? I have seen this sort of thing blow up big-time.

Grove Cleveland married AFTER he was elected President. He was 49.

President Benigno Aquino Jr. of the Philippines is over 50 and STILL UNMARRIED ( and no, he ain’t gay as far as I know).
