the shocking politicization of immigration enforcement

Close, but it's really more than that. It's politicization of most or maybe even ALL enforcement, and the growing emergence of an American nomenklatura system; if you're an insider, normal enforcement just doesn't apply:

Are you a baseball player rumored to have taken growth hormone? You'll spend a year or more under the kleig lights on Capitol Hill. Are you a YouTube video maker? You might be rousted at midnight and perp-walked by sheriff deputies under the kleig lights of 5 Satellite Van news crews, then put into solitary confinement.

Are you Secretary of State when an Embassy is destroyed in a terrorist attack? You can cover it up, and a fainting spell can get you out of testifying. Did you export machine-guns to Narco-Kingpins? Just send all the principals who could testify overseas.

More and more America is a completely ordinary country where if you're rich and powerful then the rules do not apply to you; rule by men, not laws.

What we see is that we're reverting to the jungle because Americans have decided to stop being America.

"When you see that trading is done, not by consent, but by compulsion - when you see that in order to produce, you need to obtain permission from men who produce nothing - when you see that money is flowing to those who deal, not in goods, but in favors - when you see that men get richer by graft and by pull than by work, and your laws don't protect you against them, but protect them against you - when you see corruption being rewarded and honesty becoming a self-sacrifice - you may know that your society is doomed."

“More and more America is a completely ordinary country where if you’re rich and powerful then the rules do not apply to you; rule by men, not laws.”

You just described Chicago. Now Chicago has moved to Washington DC.
