NEWTOWN, Conn. (CBS Connecticut/AP) — CBS News is reporting that 27 people are dead, including 18 students, after a mass shooting at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown. The gunman is among the dead.
CBS News’ John Miller reports there is preliminary information that the gunman was the father of one of the students. Miller additionally reports the gunman is 20 years old and is from New Jersey.
The shooter was killed and apparently had two guns, a person with knowledge of the shooting said. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation was still under way. It is not known whether the shooter took his own life or was killed.
CBS News reports that a second person is in custody and that SWAT is now investigating the home of the suspect.
A witness tells WFSB-TV that a second man was taken out of the woods in handcuffs wearing a black jacket and camouflage pants and telling parents on the scene, “I did not do it.”
Fox Connecticut reports that the shooting began in the kindergarten classroom.
“It’s just a bad situation,” Newtown Assistant Fire Chief Kevin Stoyak told CBS 2.
Two students and a teacher were also injured in the shooting and they were taken to Dansbury Hospital, spokeswoman Diane Burke told CBS News York.

When there is breaking news re a tragedy like this and you jump in and start spouting off nutty conspiracy theories and other topics off point, it’s just an annoying distraction to people that want facts and news. If you want to discuss other things, start a new thread and you and people that want to participate in such a discussion can have at it.

You may have misunderstood my original post. I did not say this was the work of our own government. Go back and reread it. I said acts of this administration, combined with the sordid and bloody history of Marxism, make those theories plausible to reasonable people.
As for how this particular incident will play out, who knows. I am not irritated or annoyed by people having their say about why they think this has happened. But conspiracies are supposedly secret, and it therefore is no conspiracy that the left will opportunistically use this to try and disarm law abiding citizens, as we already have mayor bloomberg calling for a national ban on guns.
In any event like this, people experience it differently. We are a news-ish kind of site, but we are real people too. We all experience revulsion at what has happened, and we all want to get down to the root cause and deal with it. Don’t let yourself be annoyed with good people trying to solve a bad problem. We’re all in this together.

Can’t make sense of insanity. And I can’t imagine how much pain a parent endures when a child is taken like this. I don’t think I would have weathered it well.
Well, making guns less available will not work, even if it COULD happen.
And “removing” people from society because they might commit a crime like this is a bit too police state too.
This kind of thing will come again and we will all still be scratching our heads wondering how someone could do such a ghastly thing. We cannot understand the workings of psychosis because we don’t have the capacity to process thoughts the same way a crazy person does.
