NEWTOWN, Conn. (CBS Connecticut/AP) — CBS News is reporting that 27 people are dead, including 18 students, after a mass shooting at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown. The gunman is among the dead.

CBS News’ John Miller reports there is preliminary information that the gunman was the father of one of the students. Miller additionally reports the gunman is 20 years old and is from New Jersey.

The shooter was killed and apparently had two guns, a person with knowledge of the shooting said. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation was still under way. It is not known whether the shooter took his own life or was killed.

CBS News reports that a second person is in custody and that SWAT is now investigating the home of the suspect.

A witness tells WFSB-TV that a second man was taken out of the woods in handcuffs wearing a black jacket and camouflage pants and telling parents on the scene, “I did not do it.”

Fox Connecticut reports that the shooting began in the kindergarten classroom.

“It’s just a bad situation,” Newtown Assistant Fire Chief Kevin Stoyak told CBS 2.

Two students and a teacher were also injured in the shooting and they were taken to Dansbury Hospital, spokeswoman Diane Burke told CBS News York.

How many at private schools?

Typical public school clown, can't even make a proper analogy.

Respectfully YBR, by your reasoning I see you are considerably left of right.

Yes, you will probably be flamed. Just using the term “assault rifle” (which is a full auto weapon) in your post can label you a troll.

Try to grasp this: Liberty. Lots of Republicans have lost touch with the term. We label them RINOs.

Lots of 19 year old people have guns and did not harm anyone today.

Can't refute the comment so you make a personal attack. Like I told the other homeschoolers: ask your clergyman about your inane comments and attitude

Actually I’m anything but “left of right” check my previous posts. What ever “term” you’d like to use for AR-15 be my guest. And respectfully don’t tell my what my beliefs are you don’t know me.

Grasp this: I didn’t say guns did I. I NAMED the specific types of weapons I meant. And I also said in my post I didn’t want anything or any type of legislation done. Just reflecting...so respectfully....shove it.

Well done, SR. A most gracious reply to those less than gracious to you.

You, sir, are a gentleman.

And I as the proud guardian of a wonderful 3 year old I must admit my third reaction after hearing the news was what could I personally do to ensure my grandchild is protected from that kind of nightmare. I honestly do not understand why that perfectly natural reaction, stemming as it does from love of family, should be the subject of criticism on a site like FR. Why impose on others our own unique response to horrific news like this? Do you assume it doesn’t reach us how bad this is, just because we instinctively start thinking about the protection of our loved ones?

You might as well ask why, on any of these mass shooting threads, the “first responders” are typically gun rights advocates worrying about losing their guns to stricter gun control. Don’t they care about the children? But of course they do care, and that is exactly why they want to defend gun rights. They want to protect the children who didn’t die today. So it is with home schoolers, or anybody else coming up with thoughts of how to protect the children. Baffling to me that the most natural human reaction, planning for self preservation, should be seen as a negative. Baffling indeed ...

Now they are saying the shooter was 20 Y/O again and that his brother is 24.

Concealed carry is the issue here

Yeah, sure...can't wait to see all those suburban and urban school systems in blue states happily greeting elementary school teachers who pack heat.

As to citing a homeschooled kid being murdered in their home, no I cannot give you a statistic or cite a specific case.

I'm not surprised.

Fortynine states have concealed carry. Last time I checked, school shootings were happening in them and I can't recall the last one that happened in my home state of Illinois, the only remaining state where carrying concealed is against the law. Unless you can force school systems to do with their employees what it took us decades to get state governments to do with voting citizens and do so with way, way fewer restrictions than "concealed cary" states like New York, your point makes no sense.

And yeah, it's an outrage that conservatives are criticizing public schools. How dare we.

If a drunk driver plowed into a school bus with 20 kids on it and killed them and someone on FR said said drunk driving was bad, you would not accuse them of being in favor of returning to Prohibition. Nor would you think such a comment was making light or insufficiently respectful of the people affected by this horrible tragedy.

So, you sound kind of silly doing it today. Please stop.

I didn't defend anything (and I didn't mean to offend homeschoolers, although my comment could have been read that way). I don't care much about what Bill Ayers has to say on the topic, either. The single most important factor in a child's education, in every circumstance, if the level of commitment that parents have to that child's learning. My kids all go to public schools, and I'm so involved most of the other kids think I'm a staffer.

How is the comment of *If ever a reason to homeschool????* EXTOLLING the virtues of homeschooling.

You know, homeschool parents did not have to worry that their children were some of the casualties today. Kids are safer at home and it really is another valid reason to homeschool.

Deal with it.

re: “Unless you can force school systems to do with their employees what it took us decades to get state governments to do with voting citizens and do so with way, way fewer restrictions than “concealed cary” states like New York, your point makes no sense.”

But, that is exactly the point!! Concealed carry is not legal EVERYWHERE within a state! That’s the problem. That’s why all public places are targets because concealed carry isn’t permitted there.

It’s not just a public school issue, it’s a public place issue. Just because a state allows concealed carry, it usually still restricts it to only certain places. If all schools, public and private, including universities allowed concealed carry it would definitely help stop the nut cases from doing this kind of crap.

You are correct that it will probably never happen - just as democrats will do everything BUT cut spending - they will blame everything but spending on entitlements. But, even though that is true, do we not still tell the truth and proclaim that cutting entitlement spending and taxes are the only way to get a handle on the mine shaft of a fiscal hole we are in??

Getting rid of public schools will probably never happen either, yet you have no problem with constantly calling for its demise - so, why can’t I point out that having concealed carry on public school campuses would help put a stop to these murdering bast##ds in public places?

So, even though allowing concealed carry in public schools is greatly resisted by the dems, should we not still point out the obvious answer to protecting, not just public schools, but all public areas where large numbers of people congregate?

By the way, where did I say that conservatives should not criticize public schools?? I never said nor implied such a thing.

I only said that some of the homeschoolers on this site are rabid about turning each and every negative story on public - or private - schools into a soapbox for homeschooling. Homeschooling is great, but some of you guys are exactly like the gun-grabbers in using your agenda to interpret every tragedy as a case for your pet issue.

I refuted it thoroughly.

Your agenda blinds you.

And we don't homeschool, and I am quite fine with my attitude.

You defend public education with snark and anger; that's obvious. I understand, it's a coping mechanism.

Holy crap, you take it personally, don't you?

Just because you take your pay from the mammon of the govt indoctrination industry, and you CAN'T JUST LET IT GO FOR ONE DAMN DAY, can't just let people vent their feelings without giving them a little bit of govt flunkie crap.

Do you get paid for this?

Evil peopl do evil things,my FRiend, because they are evil.

There is an entire generation maturing now that was raised without any knowledge of right or wrong, the only morals they have is if I want it I deserve it. no principles to act as a rudder and guide them through life. Again , the only guideance they have is from Madison Avenue telling them that they are the "Pepsi Generation" that anything they want, they deserve, hell with everyone else. Other cultures respected the wisdom of the aged. The "Pepsi Generation" ridicules and ignores that wisdom.

In closing, my FRiend, we are about to reap the seeds that were beginning to be sown at least 50 years ago. The harvest is going to be bitter and bountiful.

He had the kid when he was 16? They did say most kids hurt/killed were in Kindergarten

No, he did not have a child in that class.......nor was he 20 years old.

I've found that it is best to leave threads like this alone without jumping to conclusions since most of the initial news coming out is just heresay and not accurate.........
