WASHINGTON (AP) -- Susan Rice, the embattled U.N. ambassador, abruptly withdrew from consideration to be the next secretary of state on Thursday after a bitter, weekslong standoff with Republican senators who declared they would fight to defeat her nomination.
The reluctant announcement makes Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry the likely choice to be the nation's next top diplomat when Hillary Rodham Clinton departs soon.

Ironically, Kerry got his first Purple Heart when he and another soldier threw hand grenades into a VC rice supply to destroy it.
The rice shot out and his Kerry in the ass. First fraudulent PH. Second one was when he fired an M79 grenade at the VC and hit something so close that the flechette from the premature explosion hit his arm.
Third false PH was the non-happening VC mine explosion that he claimed hit his Swiftboat, causing arm and leg injuries. The boat hit an underwater obstruction, not a mine, or he wouldn’t have been here to lie about it.
If he is nominated for anything, there will be questions asked of him that will expose his treason. He has no idea what is waiting for him.
We have long memories of his treason, and long knives.
Chronologically, this was actually the first "injury". But it was not claimed at the time.
Instead, it became the third claim -- urged by his fellow officers -- which allowed him to gain "three Purple Hearts and out".
This according to the "Swift Boat Vets".
If it’s SecDef, you’re right.
SOS, not so much. Kerry is already SOS in all but title. The SwiftVets aren’t going to waste their time with some mush mouth fancy pants diplomat post.
As corrupt and incompetent as Rice is, Kerry will end up being rewarded by Beghazi Barry for over 20 years in the Senate with no distinguishing accomplishments.
The only major accomplishment that John F’n Kerry has achieved in all his time in the Senate is keeping dust from collecting in his chair. That’s not something most people would want to put on their resume.
But, then, Kerry isn’t “most people”; he’s a bottom-feeder.
Agree that the chronology is mixed up. For FR readers, see Chapter 3: The Purple Heart Hunter and Chapter 5: More Fraudulent Medals, in “Unfit for Command”, by John O’Neill and Jerome Corsi (and Scott Swett and myself).
Actually, that's not quite true. Kerry is noted for his 3-day work weeks and is almost always absent on Mondays and Fridays. And, often, as when wind-surfing or a week in Sun Valley beckons, he doesn't bother to show up at all.
If I'm not mistaken, when he ran for President in 2004, he attended the Senate all of 19 days.
One interesting fact that few people know about is that John Kerry was in... Vietnam.
As for picking up Kerry's seat, MA is hopeless IMO. Brown was an aberration and he was easily sliced and diced by the Democrat machine.
So, you’re telling me about characteristics, not accomplishments.
