Co-dictators Nicolai and Elena Ceaucescu.
"I told you not to kill the opposition. Nikolai."
What goes around comes around...of course tyrants never see it that way until shoved up against the wall or being hoisted upside down on the nearest lamp post.
I’ve never forgotten the video of his final public address. One second the square was filled with obedient, Stalinist puppet people applauding in chorus. Then a wave of something passed over them and it was as if they woke up all at once. Suddenly they were an angry populace that was fed up and would not submit, and his security team rushed him off of the balcony.
In three seconds he went from totalitarian dictator to fugitive. In three days he was put against a wall and shot.
Sic semper tyrannis.
The day that the Beast of Bucharest and her husband were stood against a wall and shot down like rabid dogs by their own Olympic shooting squad was the high water mark for human liberty in our time- and probably for all time. I remember opening a bottle of champagne and toasting the prospect of at least half of the world’s leaders, and many tens of thousands of their toadies and flunkies, facing the same fate. Communists deserve no better. May it still come to pass.
