Conservative firebrand Glenn Beck has joined a growing chorus of Republican commentators in defending gay marriage, laying out a strong case for ending government opposition to letting same-sex couples wed.
"Let me take the pro-gay marriage people and the religious people I believe that there is a connecting dot there that nobody is looking at, and that's the Constitution," Beck said during a recent segment of his online talk show. "The question is not whether gay people should be married or not. The question is why is the government involved in our marriage?"
While Beck's defense of gay marriage may seem surprising, given his far-right political views and audience, it is actually not new. Earlier this year, Beck said that he has the "same opinion on gay marriage as President Barack Obama" and does not see same-sex unions as a "threat to America."
Still, Beck's public renewal of his support for gay marriage comes at a politically significant moment for the GOP, which is working to reshape its message to appeal to a changing electorate. A Gallup survey released last week found that 53 percent of Americans are in favor of legalizing gay marriage, a number that has been steadily growing for the past decade.
Moreover, by couching his support for gay marriage in a libertarian framework, Beck makes the case for the right to look past differences on social issues in order to broaden their coalition to include all limited government conservatives.
"What we need to do, I think, as people who believe in the Constitution, is to start looking for allies who believe in the Constitution and expand our own horizon," Beck said. "We would have the ultimate big tent."

That you would direct that at anyone, let alone a female FReeper who has been a dear FRiend to many of us for decades is disgusting.
No one asked you for a "perfect" answer, they just asked you to respond to the questions put forth to you. Your reaction to any attempt to elicit some kind of meaningful response was to accuse everyone of not having 8th grade reading comprehension skills.
Ignoramuses.
I think that Wagglebee must have been correct when he said you were going to go out and consult your thesaurus. Nice word. More than 4 letters, but conveys the same sentiment.
Now, back to your gang rape.
You are a relative newbie here on Free Republic. Most of us here have been around for at least 10 years and are quite accustomed to debating issues with passion without having to resort to vile and despicable accusations and (in this case) analogies.
That comment is really the lowest of the low. It does show that you are wholly incapable of carrying on a civilized debate on a public forum. You need to go back to your Ivory tower and avoid posting your opinions on a forum where people might have the temerity to actually challenge you or demand that you explain your opinions. You seem wholly incapable of defending your positions without resorting to vile invectives against any and all who call you on the carpet.
You have reached a new low with your "gang rape" comment. But then I get the feeling that you are just warming up.
A: I suppose it was, though with due respect, numerous folks have PM'd me that they understood all of this from my much shorter posts. I went overly long on purpose.
B: Yes I did.
C: Then I apologize to you, but my crude analogy was actually applicable and appropriate to the others.
Well thanks, but
A: I have it.
B: The first part is not why I’m here
C: The second part presupposes some around here have open minds, which is not the case for SOME of the present company.
D: I’ll peruse it again anyway.
So, no one care to update the score after 586?
I didn’t think so.
Again, still looking for that new scoring update after post 586. I notice folks skipped that one for some strange reason. Just an oversight, I’m sure.
So, you're sorry for making the gang rape comment to trisham, but you're sticking by it?
P-M was right, you should definitely post someplace where nobody will respond because you seem incapable of civil discourse.
Actually, trisham responded. You subsequently accused her of participating in gang rape.
What do you think the score is?
Since you guys missed this post when sent originally, and skipped it accidentally, I wanted to help out.
Oh really? Were we even discussing BELIEFS? Or were we discussing strategy and reality? My BELIEF is that America would be better if not a single person was in favor of gay marriage, let alone involved in one. My BELIEF is that gay marriage is wrong, for so many reasons. My BELIEF is that there are cultural consequences to all of us as a result.
I also BELIEVE that millions of Americans do not share those BELIEFS and that includes our current re-elected President, at least four members, and maybe more, - of the Supreme Court including the two youngest members, and probably 55 Senators or more. I have no ability to change this, and I BELIEVE that is true of you too.
Therefore, I BELIEVE that the best way to attack this issue is by way of the states, as well as avenues outside of politics altogether. I also BELIEVE there are other more immediate threats to our freedoms, and I BELIEVE that when we lose those freedoms, we will inherently lose this battle and ALL OTHERS by definition. This is one of the reasons I BELIEVE that the stte route is the best.
I also BELIEVE that this is a complicated and difficult legal and political issue even though I BELIEVE it is a straight forward moral issue. I BELIEVE it is reasonable to have this understanding of it. I BELIEVE in a free society we will never have the legal authority to demand that everyone BELIEVE as we do, since freedom icludes the freedom to be wrong, to a point.
I BELIEVE this was Becks point, though I do not KNOW for sure. I also BELIEVE that my BELIEFS are consistent with many others, including Ronald Reagan, Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh, Mark Levin, and many fine Freepers. Again, I BELIEVE this is the case.
I also BELIEVE that some Freepers think gay marriage is the number one issue. I BELIEVE that is their right. I BELIEVE it is foolish and counterproductive for those who BELIEVE that gay marriage is the most immediate issue to condemn those who BELIEVE as I do as sell outs, RINOs, closet gays, closet pro aborts, and so on.
I believe some people weve elected are all of the above, but I BELIEVE it is absurd to assume that I, or Reagan, or Rush, or Palin, etc, to be such.
I also BELIEVE that it is intellectually shallow and bankrupt to do so.
And I BELIEVE that I have now made my self clear, though I BELIEVE I had already done so for anyone who was actually interested in having an adult conversation. And as stated, I BELIEVE this entire discussion was really about STRATEGY and TACTICS and not BELIEFS in the first place, and I BELIEVE that those who insist otherwise were looking for a fight, and not a discussion, from the get go.
I BELIEVE they sadly got what they wanted.
Trisham was not the scorekeeper, so that doesn’t count. And of course there were some posts that crossed each other in the response patter, which you should know, but tried to ignore so as to make your point. And of course I apologized to her, which is none of your business to begin with.
But you’re a scorekeeper, along with a few others, so I’d like to see some updates. And keep them in context. Anyone can pull out a few words to mislead, but I need some in context scoring here.
I don’t think you can.
Let me spell this out in the simplest possible terms:
1. YOU accused trisham of participating in "gang rape."
2. YOU LOSE.
I’ll take that as I win.
By the way, I did not accuse Trisam of “gang rape” except in the metaphorical form. And of course, you may need a thesaurus or dictionaary for that, so I’ll wait for you to check it out.............ok, back now?
I’ll admit, that was a crude analogy, but it is not the same as making that accusation in the literal form. I then realized that she was NOT part of the metaphorical gang rape, and immediately apologized.
Which brings us back to the truth. You can’t touch 586. A thinking person wouldn’t have needed it, as I was assued through numerous PM’s, but I typed it as slowly as I could.
So, where are the jabs, hooks, scars now?
And quit hiding behind the skirt. It is very Hamas of you to do so.
Get the hell off of this thread and stay off!! One more attack by you on any freeper and you get the zot!! Would be best if you just stay the hell off of FR for awhile. I’ll suspend your account for you if you cannot resist the temptation, PUNK!!
Wagglebee is a gentleman. That may seem an antiquated concept to some, but not to me. He is also a friend, and I would ask you not to insult him.
Thank you, Jim.
In light of your lame posts about the reading comprehension of others, I find this delightfully ironic.
By the way, I did not accuse Trisam of gang rape except in the metaphorical form.
How about "circle jerk"? Was that also a metaphor?
Which brings us back to the truth. You cant touch 586. A thinking person wouldnt have needed it, as I was assued through numerous PMs, but I typed it as slowly as I could.
As I already noted, any claims you had to civil discourse evaporated with post 599.
And quit hiding behind the skirt.
What the hell is that supposed to mean?
It is very Hamas of you to do so.
It's always just a matter of time before a troll compares social conservatives to the the Taliban or Hamas.
Merry Christmas!
Interesting language, too bad your post 204 to me was removed, it would have been interesting to see your wording about "latent" this and that, of those of us opposing the homosexual agenda, compared with this language.
Hey P-Marlowe! Thanks for the ping. Been in Lurkerdom.
Hi CCE! You missed the jousting match. Kinda reminded me of our old sparring days on the Cal/Arm wars.
Haven’t seen too many GRPL’s these days. Maybe you could ping them to our Friday Neener Hijack. I would do it, but as you know I am eternally listless.
Post a lawyer joke and you shall receive absolution for your absence from the threads.
The Lord Protector has spoken.
