Chrysler workers who were fired or suspended two years ago after a MyFoxDetroit investigation found them drinking and goofing off during lunch break are back on the job. MyFoxDetroit first aired the footage of the Chrysler workers in September 2010.

Years ago, when I was looking for a job in Tulsa, OK I stopped for lunch at a place to eat at a place in the working section of town. It was noon and the place was full of working men who had come in on their noon break, and all were hitting the beer as fast as they could.

A year later I was visiting a friend in Farmington NM and the working men there actually had beer on the job.

Most places would not allow it.

Nothing like beer cans and ciggy butts in the door panels to accompany that new car smell.

Hopefully they learned their lesson. They shouldn’t be punished for life for drinking.

I would definitely urine test them once in a while to keep them honest.

In fairness, though, the cars are crap because they pay these guys way too much (in pay and bennies) relative to the competition, and the cars sell for less than imports, so the costs have to come out from somewhere. So they chintzed out the powertrain assemblies, which is why Honda powertrains outlast 2 generations of brand new Chrysler powertrains.

Heads up for all who want to be moles. I got an email from the teamsters.

Tonight, Monday, December 10th, General President Hoffa will be hosting an important conference call with Michigan Teamsters to talk about the Right-To-Work legislation that is moving in Lansing. Right-to-Work would be devastating to Michigan’s middle class, so we need every Teamster in the state to get involved if we’re going to stop it. The call will begin at 7 pm and should last about 30 minutes. You can dial in to the call using the number 855-269-4484.

On the call, you will hear about the huge rally being planned for tomorrow, Tuesday, December 11th in Lansing. Teamsters are asked to meet at 8:00 am tomorrow in Rooms 203 - 205 of the Lansing Center (333 East Michigan Avenue, Lansing, MI 48933). We will then march together to the State Capitol for the rally and day of action. Remember to wear your Teamster jackets, shirts, and hats! For a rally flyer, please visit: http://www.teamster.org/sites/teamster.org/files/121012flierrighttoworknov11.pdf

Again, the Right-To-Work conference call details are as follows:

When: Monday, December 10th

Time: 7:00 pm

Call-in number: 855-269-4484

And the details for the rally meeting place are:

When: Tuesday, December 11th

Time: 8:00 am

Where: Lansing Center (333 East Michigan Avenue, Lansing, MI 48933)

Meet in Rooms 203 – 205

I worked places that:

1) have a strict no alcohol policy
2) are OK if you go out for lunch and have a beer (they did have a policy that you couldn’t charge alcohol to your expense account or the company)
3) allow you to drink at your desk (it was a small company, and they did have to carry extra insurance—which gets to my point below)

IMHO, bans on alcohol at work have less to do with productivity, and more to do with liability. In other words—blame the lawyers.

Really? Folks get fired everyday for breaking company policy. Guess Chrysler would be in court if these drug abusing sots killed someone when they were high on the job. Not to mention that their families would collect lifetime benefits and life insurance. So what reason would they have to change their ways when they were not punished?

Oh and Randy the Union will not allow them to be drug tested.

Coors brewery employees used to be allowed to have beer at lunch. They stopped that policy years ago.

Chrysler didn’t fire them for drinking on their lunch break. They were fired for getting caught and appearing on the newscast.

Man, they got busted!! And that was by a third party. What exactly is the lesson to be learned?

Not to drink on the job?? I'm pretty sure that is in the contract.

To be more discrete?

That you can flaunt the rules of civilization and get away with it?

Maybe they ought to give the urine test to the arbitrators.
