After three years of declining sales, shipments of domestically sold beer are up by more than 1% in the United States this year. Sales of light beer and specialty beer, such as Budweiser Light Platinum, Shock Top, and Blue Moon, have been the driving force in the resurgence of U.S. breweries.
While sales of specialty, craft, and small-market beers have improved dramatically, many of the traditional, full-calorie beers that were once the staples of most breweries have fallen behind. In the five years ending in 2011, sales of Budweiser, which was once the top-selling beer in the country for years, have fallen by 7 million barrels. Sales of Michelob are down more than 70%. Based on data provided by Beer Marketers INSIGHTS, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed the nine large or once-large beer brands with a five-year decline in sales of 30% or more...

Out here in the Pac Northworst, some great old local breweries are long gone: Rainier, Blitz, Olympia....
Thank God PBR is still around (for a mass brewed beer)
It sounds to me as if there are two separate trends at work here.
One is a move away from crummy beers like Bud to better beers like Sam Adams, or local craft beers. I drink Sam Adams, Long Trail (Vermont), Shipyard (Maine), and a few others, or occasionally imported beer if the price is right.
But I wouldn’t touch lite beer with a ten foot pole. Bud Lite is the worst beer in the world, or close to it. The increasing popularity of lite beers probably comes from liberal idiots who can’t give up beer entirely but have been persuaded that it’s healthier for them.
Nah. If you can’t drink one beer a day, then split it with a friend. But don’t give me that lite stuff.
Ahhh.....Schaffer. Pronounced with a French accent (”Sha-Fay”) to give it a bit of snob appeal.
I never drank it in college. Others I knew did, however, and their hangovers were something to behold. The digestive after effects the next day were volcanic.
Me too. After a night of beer drinking, my tribe name is Man Who Tinkles Lots.
I still have an Olympia opener. I salvaged it from Dad’s tacklebox.
I have been drinking Shiner Bock from Texas for years. It is becoming available more and more nationwide (for a very very good reason). I can even get it when I'm in wisconsin.
Newcastle Brown Ale satisfies my occasional British ale cravings.
Wjen it comes to the best beers, look to Germany, seriously.
That being said, there are plenty of excellent beers readily available these days in most locales. And I don't mean fruit flavored nonsense, but well-made lagers and ales.
Crud! Olympia isn’t made anymore?
I drank a fair bit of that in college. Not bad, for a cheap beer.

All the good old crap beers are disappearing!
I thought budweiser sold out to the belguiqes?
Back in the early 80’s there was Buckhorn. When I was in law school, my college buddies with real jobs came to town and wanted me to join them at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for time trials I barely had money to get into the track but somehow found an extra $1.79 for a six of Buckhorn. While we were there some 12 year old kid came up and “hey mister, can I have one of those?” When I pointed out he was a little young, he said he just wanted an empty can for his collection. He said “I’ve never seen anyone drink that before.”
Yuenling for sure....and I’m not even that great of a beer drinker, but a nice cold bottle...or draft even better.....when we drive to the east, we always pick up a couple of cases....
Storm King is a good one, but too heavy to have more than a couple.i like to in around late afternoon get a few samples as I try to figure out what to put in the growlers. It is a blessing to have tem so close.
That said, I do remember when Amstel Light was my light beer of choice, back in the day after work when I didn't really drink.
Don’t forget about Wiedemann. My dad drank Wiedemann. I think it was a deliberate sacrifice to keep us boys out of his refrigerator.
