I will and do “talk” politics with them but I italicized the talk because I found a much better way to get a message through, I simply couch my argument by asking simple questions without expecting an answer. Eventually the answer comes but it gets to being far different than what you expect at first.
My mother who is now 82 flipped from being a lifelong Roosevelt Democrat to voting Republican for the first time ever this past election. My sister was the same way. Both are union members at Vegas Hotel Casinos. All it took was a few evenings of discussions while I was there on business the week before the election. They eventually began asked me for answers to my questions to check themselves out.
My brother is a union muckity muck at a vary large aircraft engine company. He too voted Republican for the very first time as well and for much of the same reasons, but he came to some conclusions beforehand when he started to realize the Democrat Party was not for the workers but for the takers and he had risen to the position of a maker. It took self reflection without the blinders for him to wake up. In jest, I asked him how his new crutches were getting along with him.
The bottom line is when they want to argue the point of conservatism vs. liberalism I just simply ask the questions that only they can come to answering for themselves and the other thing I do is to express my displeasure for any side of the political establishment because it is they who have us at each others throat.
Nope, we;ll never have a perfect candidate. I’d be happy with one that didn’t violate more than 80% of conservative (actual conservative, not ‘modern’ conservative) belief.
We had several. But the GOP cheer squad spent literally millions in MSM ads to ensure the GOP maintained a conservative-free power structure.
And so we anxiously await the inauguration of Obama II.
bookmark for later reading. Your last letter was well worth reading, I’m sure this one will be, too.
This is a waste of time. Just keep on doing what you do.
I mildly criticized a Perry speech (the only one I watched in entirety) but then it was pointed out it was in front of union members and he had to tiptoe. In hindsight, I think he should have been more forceful in that speech (and maybe others).
I was a out-of-state supporter of Santorum in his Senate race. I had no criticisms of the other candidates except the ones I ignored like Huntsman. But there is a huge problem of letting the media definitions of candidates leak over into this forum and other serious debates. I think the biggest problem is that the primary process is way too long and gives the media too much power.
And wide open.
The only logical conclusion for an open primary in party politics is to ultimately create one party. Open primaries defeat the purpose of a ‘having’ political party by definition.
I think this is a great way for you and your FIL to debate. SO many times our emotions take over. I know it happens to me here, on FR, when I sometimes fire off a rapid response to someone. But it is less emotionless than if I were saying it in person.
And taking the time to deconstruct the arguments and build a solid response is calming and can give you time to go back and rethink phrases that may be coming off as angry. And depending on your mileage, maybe you can chip away at some of the mess you are encountering. At the same time you are increasing your own conservative knowledge.
And from my own point of view, I am do distressed at both the black and hispanic (and now possibly the asian) ethnic groups in this country, as well as Jewish people. They have become a political slave class. For blacks particularly, to move from being physical, labor slaves, to a political slave breaks my heart.
Good job, and if you can keep it up and want to continue sharing with us, it will be an interesting “diary” so to speak. And set up a ping list for interested followers.
Let me summarize; your father is an ass.
It all boils down to one sentence. “Who get’s to choose the old commie’s nursing home?”
P.S. With your blue background, your dad should be reminded that he will become a posthumous Republican for a very long time.
I wanted to stop reading right there, but scanned the rest for more BS. Then I came to this part:
... it is very clear to me that if Obama was White, and his father was born in, say Belgium, there almost certainly wouldnt be a birther movement hounding his every move.
If 0 bummer had been white, he would probably have never been elected to the IL State Senate, much less the US Senate. With his record of voting "Present", he'd have been laughed out of the race. Remember when BJ Clinton told someone "A few years ago, this guy would be serving us coffee"?
You’ve done a good job.
I’ll NEVER convert one sister and her husband (a PhD in Sociology) because he is Dutch and they lived in Holland for about 10 years. I believe the difference in Holland is that everyone is expected to contribute and for the most part they haven’t been pitted against each other the way we have - with a large group feeling entitled and another group feeling guilty. Divide and conquer. Both my sister and her husband are the 3rd children in the birth order and I suspect this also has something to do with their view of the world. They actually recorded Keith Olberman and Rachel Madow for later watching. So I had to quit discussing politics for the greater good in the family. This is Washington State anyway - a lost cause at this point.
Unless the guy is planning to leave you a lot of money or you work directly for him why didn’t you just tell him to “eff off”? It would have been short, sweet and allowed you a lot of extra time to do something else like drink a beer.
It’s ordered from Amazon.
Oh, Romney probably shouldn’t just shut the hell up, but he was right on that. I’ve seen it up close; the Obama regime is as aggressive as any in my lifetime in actively seeking to get as many people enrolled in welfare programs as possible, and that doesn’t even account for all of the corporate cronyism that goes on as well.
Another poster pointed out the other day that a mere 27.5% of ELIGIBLE voters supported Zero on Election Day. Of that, you have a portion of that vote that came from racists (people who voted for him based on skin color) and another portion that came from fraud (people voting twice, machines being front-loaded with votes, machines 'flipping' votes, and so on).
There is NO reason to believe that people who did NOT support Zero are the MINORITY in this country.
Thanks. I knew that somewhere back in my brain.
Yes, that is a good point. Republicans and conservatives should never let progressives and Democrats get away with language carries within it this implicit assumption that all money is owned by the government.

Thanks, I’ll keep this in my files. It could be helpful to a lot of people I know.
