In the state of Texas, all sworn Peace Officers (city/county/state) have the responsibility to be a Peace Officer 24 hours a day. I know that personally since I was a Deputy in Texas before I quit and moved to Japan. In my son's police department, they are required to be armed when in public, at all times, to be unarmed, is grounds for dismissal.

Same at the S.O. when I was in.
Badge and gun on at all times except sleep and shower (more or less)...
I always had them under a pull over shirt though (when ‘off-duty’).. didn’t want to cause discomfort ;)
