It's looking very likely that a bill in Congress that will make mandatory the use of "black boxes"— more formally, Event Data Recorders (EDR) — will become law soon. These are little computers clad in rugged casings that record data from your car's various sensors and computers to use for accident investigation and, very likely, other uses.
There's lots of privacy concerns around this new bill, and lots of questions as to exactly what that little boxy black snitch is snooping on. Plus, what about the voluntary black boxes some insurance carriers are offering? Let's see what we can clear up.

There will be a market for devices that can replace them without disabling you car.
Just like there are devices today that enhance the performace of your car by bypassing certain emitions crap.
There will be plenty of “foolers” for these things in the future.
What I would like to have is a forward-facing camera that records and minute or so. Lately we’ve been driving in the NYC/NJ metro area. Dozens of times we’ve seen drivers indulging in truly reckless behavior. Passing on the right at 75-80 mph and then cutting people off with only a foot or two to spare. I would love to have a 5-10 second recording of their actions and a button on the dash that sends it to the state police.
The recorders have been in place on many vehicles for several years now. They weren’t publicized or at least didn’t get that much attention it seems. GM has been using a version since back in the mid 90s and Ford started in early 2000 I believe.

They will prolly attach it to the ignition system so if you tamper with it the car won’t start.

I have the subframe mounts already in place.
