Just as a note, it is not a requirement for the Speaker of the House to be a sitting House member - anyone can be elected to hold that post by the House, even if they have never held elective office in their life.

Yes, seriously. Most people do not realize that. The only thing the Constitution says is: “The House of Representatives shall chuse [sic] their Speaker and other Officers; and shall have the sole Power of Impeachment.” (Article 1, Section 2, Clause 5)
