Israel Keyes was a serial killer who traveled from Alaska to Vermont for the "specific purpose of kidnapping and murdering," and who chose his victims there for no reason other than the layout of their home, Vermont authorities said Monday.
Speaking to Vermont media, federal and local authorities gave the first detailed account of the killings of Bill and Lorraine Currier, a couple who disappeared from their Essex, Vt., home in June 2011.
Keyes' victims encountered "a force of pure evil acting at random," said Tristram Coffin, the U.S. attorney for Vermont.
Prosecutors said Keyes confessed in jail to first shooting Bill Currier to death as he yelled for his wife and then sexually assaulting and strangling Lorraine Currier in the basement of an abandoned farmhouse.
The 34-year-old contractor and handyman, accused in the kidnapping and murder of 18-year-old Samantha Koenig, committed suicide in his jail cell at the Anchorage Correctional Complex on Sunday, authorities said.
Authorities believe Keyes killed eight people: Samantha Koenig, the Curriers, one person in New York and four in Washington state.

I used the story of the kidnapping of a barista in Anchorage by this scum to illustrate to my daughters how to respond if they are ever threatened by a kidnapper.
Samantha Koenig, the barista, was taken, allegedly at gunpoint, from an expresso stand by Keyes. Her body was found later in a lake. My advice to my daughters was to fight like a wildcat, run, yell, scream, scratch, kick, bite whatever it took to break free regardless of whether it meant being shot or knifed. At least you would have a chance of a passerby hearing or seeing the commotion and aiding a lady in distress.
Good advice.
Better yet - teach your kids how to shoot
Carry weapons. All the time. Both lethal and non lethal. Learn the proper and most effective ways to use them. Learn exactly where to cut and stab with a knife. Learn exactly where and how to strike with an impact weapon. Learn to shoot accurately and quickly under duress.
We live in a world gone absolutely mad.
If you intend to keep your life, you may well have to fight to the death for it.
From watching Oprah years ago, never go to the second location.
Told my daughter the same thing. It is much better to be shot in a Wal-mart parking lot than on a dark dirt road 30 miles from town.
Also taught her what it meant to fight like a wildcat. Eyes, knees and nuts are all vulnerable.
When the news of the missing barista was first reported, the police released a security camera photo of the young lady and the kidnapper walking away.
Made me sick to think of her being intimidated so much that she wouldn't fight at that point for her life, knowing later that she was killed.
This kidnapper jumped the rail in a court room hearing earlier this year and was tased.
A great book is "Strong On Defense" by Sanford Strong. It trains you how to mentally prepare yourself to survive sudden violence.
It's a perfect gift for the wife, or for kids going away to college.
A blitz attack. Very scary.
*Shudder*
Soulless eyes.
Burn in HELL you despicable POS!
