NBC sportscaster Bob Costas used his weekly monologue on Sunday Night Football to discuss the fallout of the tragedy in Kansas City, urging viewers to move past the cliched coverage of the perspective gleaned from the news that linebacker Jovan Belcher killed his girlfriend and then himself Saturday morning.
Costas focused much of his monologue on a column by Fox Sports Jason Whitlock, which argued that current gun culture simply ensures that more and more domestic disputes will end in the ultimate tragedy. Costas said that although he often doesnt agree with Whitlock, he found his argument to be spot on this time.

Costas is an idiot. Like the guns caused the fatalities. Just ridiculous. An NFL player could have killed his gf how many different ways without a gun? The gun had nothing to do with it. I just got done with deer season here. I got a deer to have my family have meat for dinner until February. That’s a big savings in my budget. My gun DID NOT kill your gf. Your actions did. Jeeesz!
Knows a little about sports and nothing about our rights.
Because Jovan be too stupid to use a knife, Bob?
That goes without saying.
If Jovan did not play in the NFL, Kassandra would still be alive. Maybe. How many guns are in circulation in the US and have never been used to kill a girlfriend?
So if Jovan Belcher threw Kassandra Perkins out a window I guess Bob Costas would feel better.
Gloria Bunker Stivic: Do you know that sixty percent of all deaths in America are caused by guns ?
Archie Bunker: Would it make you feel any better, little girl, if they was pushed out of windows ?
I guess 99.99999999%
Costas is still the smug, arrogant jackass we've come to know and despise as sports fans.
Why don’t we hear if homosexuality was outlawed, there wouldn’t be AIDS.
made a political statement during a game. He's disgusting. I don't see how anyone watching that, can't see he was irresponsible.
...as long as Hollywood, the video game industry and the gangsta hip-hop music biz are all willing to do what's necessary to address this “gun culture” problem Costas wants to talk about.
Go screw yourself Costas; leave the 2nd Amendment alone.
If Bill Clinton didn’t possess a penis, Juanita Broaddrick wouldn’t have been raped.
Disappointing. I always liked Costas as an interviewer (that show he had on after Letterman in the NBC days was excellent), and I thought it gutsy of him to insist on honoring the murdered Israeli athletes from the 1972 Munich Olympics. But this is just absurd. The gun is not to blame here. Belcher could just as easily slain his wife, or for that matter the average adult male, with a knife or his bare hands. The gun made his own suicide quicker and easier, but again, it was not the only way he could have done so.
What happened in this case is beyond terrible. But let’s lay the blame where it belongs, with the man who did the crime.
If NBC’s security didn’t have guns... Bob Costas wouldn’t have security at work .
