Hospice is at least a choice and a known quantity.

The other way the NHS deals with expendable people is by slow-rolling them, delaying appointments, making the wait for treatment, etc. The sick joke was that the wait for an abortion was 10 months.

Choice yes, but known, not necessarily. Drugging with opiates is placed on a schedule administered arbitrarily by hospice nurses, who may or may not be hemlock society types, or may not appreciate the remaining “value” of the patient. I’ve seen deliberate acceleration of death in otherwise sentient cancer patients at least twice, in personal circumstances.

The main point is that the “path”, and the corresponding frame of mind, is present here now, and quite ready to be implemented to a further, “official” degree.
