FEMA inspector told me we wouldn’t have lost any roofs from houses on the Gulf Coast during Ike if we would have had hurricane proof shingles. Turns out he was from California and he told me that all the construction in California is now hurricane and earthquake proof. Told him I didn’t realize California had hurricanes and his response, “Well, you never know”.
And he is naive and an idiot. I'm in South San Francisco, in California. We currently have a storm raging outside, in addition to a bad one a couple days ago with tree limbs down. A few years ago we had a tornado touch down in my neighborhood, just blocks from my home. It ripped the roofs off several businesses. So no, our construction in California is not hurricane or earthquake proof.
"I cannot imagine any condition which would cause a ship to founder. I cannot conceive of any vital disaster happening to this vessel. Modern ship building has gone beyond that." -Captain Smith, Commander of Titanic
"There is no danger that Titanic will sink. The boat is unsinkable and nothing but inconvenience will be suffered by the passengers." -Phillip Franklin, White Star Line Vice-President
"My mother had a premonition from the very word 'GO.' She knew there was something to be afraid of and the only thing that she felt strongly about was that to say a ship was unsinkable was flying in the face of God. Those were her words." -Eva Hart, Titanic Survivor
Even God himself couldn't sink this ship- Capt. Edward John Smith (legend)
