Virginia, Massachusetts and Rhode Island will be the first three states to sell leases for the right to develop offshore wind farms, U.S. government officials said Friday.
The leases will be auctioned online, probably in the first half of 2013, according to the U.S. Department of the Interior, the federal agency overseeing the sales.
The auctions will determine which energy company, utility or entrepreneur gets to build huge wind turbines and reap clean electricity from them in designated areas in the Atlantic Ocean. Costs are expected to be in the billions.
No offshore wind farms exist today in the United States, though they can be seen off several European coasts and are planned in Chinese waters.

Another title, “Utility Bills to Rise”.
Somebody has massive amounts of money invested in the scam and can’t let it die.
This is where the next stimulus package money will go. More Solyndras. The democrats are bankrupting our nation on purpose.
Plenty of republicans involved. Just the other day my “semicrat” governor (Rick Snyder) called for continued subsidies for wind in Michigan despite the green energy mandate being crushed on election day.
He swerves all over the road like a drunken moron. In the same speech he called for increased natural gas drilling in the state as well as a state reserve of natural gas to be sold within the state in times of high prices. I just wish he could stay in his lane when he gets it right.
Conservative groups should challenge in court any building on purchased leases.
What should they sue for? Things like preserving the endangered spotted Shell Crab, or the near extinct Sea Flotsum, or the extremely rare Shelf Jetsum, etc. Repeat as necessary.
Oh, you say these don’t exist? Well, of course they do... you just have not heard of them, since they are so rare! And we must not kill them off... We’ll find a court that agrees and is not one of those Flotsum and Jetsum deniers.
Same here in Texas. Guv Goodhair luvs him some windmills.
That’s what irritates me about these guys who want to be all things to all people. We end up fighting them as much as we do the democrats.
Given that windfarms tend to be located in such relatively constant air flow areas, and that the windfarms are converting the kinetic energy of the moving air masses into mechanical energy, and thence into electricity (when they are working, anyway), just how much energy can we remove from the planet's temperature equalization system before we actually alter the climate?
CO2 isn't the monster, here, as proven by the absence of data confirming predictions of dire consequences.
However, the altering of the temperature control mechanisms of the Earth by sapping them of inherent energy just might create the problems the warmists are blaming on the very industries which produce useable forms of energy without tinkering with the movement of air masses.
So let’s get this straight...
You can build “wind farms” off the coast of VA but no oil derricks...
You can put “wind” in your car’s tank these days?
Peak electricity demand on the East Coast occurs during the summer. And if you want to know about wind..ask an old sailor like me and he will tell you at those times..and most of the summer..Buzzards Bay, Long Island Sound, the Virginia and NJ shore are like the Dead Sea..no wind. So I guess that will be a good time to send expensive union workers out to service these giant white elephants.
So go ahead..waste our tax money and drive up rates by duplicating generating capacity.
It’s stunning to see how the logic of all this is totally ignored...
The inmates really are running the asylum....
At least windmills on land are cheap. Power from ocean windmills costs 2-3x.
