That’s exactly what I’ve said. The GOP will be screwed in the press no matter what they do. They might as well do the right thing (and the job they were sent to do) and not play politics. They won’t win the political game because the press stacked the deck.

But if they do that they might not be reelected: a thought that induces night terrors in today's professional political class. What about those lush retirement and medical benefits? The media attention and glitzy parties, not to mention the under-the-table "extras" provided by lobbyists?

The Republic died the day Americans allowed politics to become a profession and not a civic calling.
