I find it ironic that Kristoff is so steamed up about personal generators, when this same guy thought it cool if everyone made a power grid obselete by having solar panels. Just makes no sense. People having personal power is a good thing, right? Exactly. In a storm like Sandy, the first things to get blown away are roof mounted solar panels. An emergency generator checked out in advance and fueled by a supply of gasoline is just the ticket. That storm was a surprise to nobody; it was tracked for more than a week in advance.

In general, properly mounted solar panels strengthen the roof and do not get blown off unless the storm is strong enough to take the entire roof. Other than that, I agree that the ongoing class envy is absurd. I'm proud of my neighbors with generators, not jealous.
