If a president wanted to enable the destruction of a beloved ally, and the general population became enraged, he might want to empower a paramilitary force within his own country to “deal with” any violent insurrection.
He might want to purchase a lot of ammunition with killing power for his domestic military.
He would want to create large divisions in that society so he could react to the ‘crisis’.

Actions tend to have unexpected re-actions. For example, the ’73 oil embargo, for the rest of the decade, greatly reduced America’s appetite for oil. Israel has been developing military and political relationships with the Chinese, the Indians, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan and Japan. If the US cut off military aide the Israelis could trade nuclear technology, radar technology and advanced rocketry for anything they needed. Much of this technology is stuff the US would like to keep out of the afore-mentioned actors’ hands. But if we’re actively injuring Israel what leverage would the US have to stop said exchanges?
BTW, Israel would be much less constrained if it wasn’t concerned with protecting the free flow of free military technology.
Does this mean the Gazans will be sanctioned for delivering munitions into Israel via rocket?
