Plain old sugar is almost identical to HFCS. HFCS is typically 55% fructose/45% glucose, where sucrose (plain sugar) is 50/50 fructose/glucose.

Fructose metabolism promotes triglyceride(fat) synthesis. It quickly becomes glycerol, the 3 carbon alcohol that condenses with free fatty acids to form triglycerides, the storage form of fat.
