Sickening thought to know that the ultraliberal politics of Tim Kaine are precisely what his father-in-law Linwood Holton wanted the GOP to embrace. Dreadful loss not only to VA, but to the nation when Dick Obenshain boarded that plane. He might’ve become President. I see his son is running to succeed Cuccinelli as AG. We must stay positive, though. Make the Democrats own the current fiasco we’re in.
Finally another freeper who GETS IT. Although admittedly, we have almost as much trouble finding a good non-Sununu candidate for U.S. Senate in NH as the RATs have finding a non-McAwful candidate in VA. I really think an unknown state legislator could run a decent U.S. Senate race up there though. Quite a few of the current U.S. Senators (Tester, Hagan, Merkley, Pryor, Murray, etc.) were little known state legislators before winning an upset Senate race. The RATs are quite effective at that. Though on our side the only upsets I can think of that went from the state legislature to the U.S. Senate are Fischer and Rubio.
Six....count them, 6 NH state senators retired in 2012. There’s no way the state GOP should have allowed this. The NHGOP should have 15 or 16 senate seats if these 6 did not take a walk.
I noticed that, and at least 1 ran for and lost for Exec Councilor. Of course, even the commanding GOP majority in the House wasn’t enough to hold on.
In the case of Mark Pryor, he was the sitting state Attorney General with a political pedigree, but he never served in the state legislature (his father did, prior to his election to Congress). Merkley and Rubio were House Speakers. Tester was Senate President. So these had some sort of leadership role in their legislatures.
Of course, Obama himself owes his entire national career to being an obscure state Senator in the right place at the right time when the IL GOP imploded.

I posted here ~4 years ago that the GOP should be looking at Lt. Govs, State AGs, State Treasurers, Legislative leaders, etc. for national-level candidates. In fact, I had my “Paul Ryan/Greg Abbott” tagline for a while and I got a number of “Who’s that?” or “You can fit their supporters in a phone booth.” comments.
The farm system is where the talent is. People (typically) want fresh faces with new messages. And the GOP is as guilty as sin in recycling candidates (yes, I know RR won on his third try, but that was, politically, 1,000 centuries ago). This “it’s his turn” has done nothing but produce losing campaigns.
At this point, and it’s probably too late, but the GOP needs to think STRATEGICALLY. Identify the talent and groom them. Make them understand that if they’re asked an inane question to non-answer it (Hello Mourdouk and Akin). One of, if not the first thing ALL GOP politicians should do is to take courses on how to speak to/handle the media.
Sports analogy that fits: The NE Patriots make their players take these types of media relations courses. Do you ever listen to a Tom Brady press conference, for example? The guy’s a pro at non-answering pretty much anything or answering what he wants to exactly how he wants to. Many former Pats players have moved on to roles in sports media. Why? They can communicate; they are media savvy. And in today’s “American Idol” society, that’s HUGE.
The GOP needs to step into the 21st century and play to win. That means cultivating new talent and developing it.
Back to NH: It was nice to see Sununu Sr. as the attack dog for Mittens, but he must be pushing 80 years old (not that I personally have a problem with that). Where are/were the fresh faced attack dogs for the GOP? Marco Rubio was about it.
Quality, non-incestous candidates, who can communicate and “relate” to the masses are needed. They will win.

I think Elizabeth Dole had a problem from the get-go with being an elitist who returned to a state she hadn’t had much to do with in some time.
True, she was a weak candidate from the start, but she didn’t have any problems beating Irksome Bowles in her first Senate campaign.
He was even more dubious. A Clinton flunkie and son of a failed Gubernatorial candidate.
