I forget which city (Boston or New York) but I asked for a cup of coffee at a hotel and after an employee asked how I preferred it, my response was “just a regular coffee.” She poured cream or milk and was about to add sugar. I said again I just want a regular coffee and she told me that This is a regular coffee.” I told her I didn’t want a milkshake, just coffee. So, no white stuff in my coffee; how “progressive.” And oh, I like white turkey meat.
I believe that “Regular Coffee” in either one of those cities would be coffee with at least cream and probably sugar as well. “Regular” means different things in different parts of the country.
When asked how I want my coffee, my usual description is “just black” — is that racist?
