More than 5,000 New Yorkers will be hired for temporary government jobs cleaning up after Sandy, officials said Sunday.
About $27 million in federal Labor Department money will finance the cleanup and rebuilding positions in New York City and eight nearby counties, paying about $15 per hour and generally lasting about six months, state and federal officials said.
Separately, the state and the Federal Emergency Management Agency are working to put New Yorkers into more than 700 temporary FEMA jobs, some as administrative assistants and community relations workers.
"This is a neighbors-helping-neighbors effort," state Labor Commissioner Peter Rivera said at a news conference in Red Hook, a Brooklyn neighborhood flooded by Sandy's surge. Gov. Andrew Cuomo called it "a chance to provide young and unemployed New Yorkers with job opportunities cleaning up their communities."

$10 says they won’t be “temporary” and will be represented by a union.
“$10 says they wont be temporary and will be represented by a union.”
And another $10 says that these hires, along with their immediate families will be, if they weren’t already, Democrat voters.
Behold the power of government cheese.
Only CURRENT Union members will be hired.
a make work program ,move that stuff from there to there ,then bring in another group to move the stuff back again
I have to call Bull$hit on that. This is the nanny state acting like your daddy. Creating “jobs”. Some of which will turn into a career at union defined wages and benefits. Much like a TSA job 11 years ago. Neighbors-helping-neighbors is when I or some guy like me helps the guy next door or down the road repair his property without expectation of pay or compensation.
A few years late, but we finally have “SHOVEL READY JOBS”!
...gag...
Shovel ready jobs
Cry, the land and seas all do
Tax dollar$, all lies

Does Sandy cleanup really require 2,500 man-years in low-skill labor?
Replay of the Deepwater Horizon oil cleanup. ACORN will provide the “workers” and get their cut off the top.
The mob won’t miss this baby...
The damage from Sandy in every other area is probably 80% completd and NY is just starting?? At OBX this weekend and found it in full swing. Many private contracters completing storm damage jobs. Highway 12 on Hattras Island area under repair but open to 4x4 traffic. Ferrys are doing a good job. People are in good spirits - lookin’ good! - come on down!!
Didn’t FDR “revive” our nation’s economy the same way?
Why not just put the able bodied slackers to work that are already getting a free ride from Uncle Sugar?
I guess maybe it’s too much to ask from the reparation crowd.
Great suggestion. They could just tell people that are drawing any kind of government benefits that they have a wonderful deal for them. Either they would take the temp job or no more benefits provided by taxpayers.
You mean someone is going to have to work for their largesse? How demeaning!! Why work when you can get it without working?
it’s recent, so recent
just a matter of days

This only happens in white neighbor hoods. Blacks want the government to do the work or pay them to help. Wonder if the Union trash collectors will allow non union helpers to help clean up.//s
