LIPA customers who spent weeks without power due to Sandy get zapped with normal electric bills

LIPA customers who spent weeks without power got zapped with their normal electric bills — as if the outages never happened.

The clueless utility charged Sandy-soaked Long Island residents an estimated rate that covered the entire billing cycle, and the statements made no mention of potential refunds to account for the prolonged blackouts.

Jonathan Saporta was slapped with a double whammy by the Long Island Power Authority — a $649 bill for the Long Beach home he left in October and a $281 bill for his new Great Neck pad.

Imagine after having no power for weeks you get an electric bill based on estimated use that amount $$$$ looks like last years same month bill. Talk about insult to injury.

Its not their fault they couldn’t make a meter reading is it?

I am very sorry I called it a village.
Whoah!

Anyway, haven’t heard them complain.

Modern New York has a great deal of black influence in the way people speak. And, possibly, a Hispanic infusion. And, of course, mid-20th century was dominated by the Jews and the Yiddish contribution. That, gladly, still hangs on.

And I love the way Europeans will say: “I have a cousin in Brooklyn. Do you know him?”

And I'm very sorry you said . . .

"They lost their entire village to a fire (the whole village - the only thing left standing was a statue of the BVMary)"

. . . because it isn't true.

Whoah!

I've heard complaints, mostly about the lack of a working laundromat on the peninsula and the rice, rice, and more rice being offered at the relief food stations to meat and potato eaters. Orders are being placed with Amazon for cases of canned roast beef, ham, corned beef hash, etc.

Well, they may as well ask!
Because of the ‘small world’ thing - it happens!

That’s what I tell folks when they hesitate - - ‘okay, just ask me - - ya never know!’
Because of that very funny incident going into the subway. . .
And sometimes people know people who know people -

Re. cultural influences on NY accents - - -

Occasionally I’ll purposely put on one NY accent or another (because I’ve lost my natural NY one, truly), and end up saying, ‘I’m ‘allowed’ to do that because I’m from New York!

‘______rice, rice and more rice________’

Realize many people are fairly strict with the love of meat and potatoes (rarely trying anything else - - ), but if it’s good brown rice being offered, it’s highly nutritious.
Wouldn’t turn my nose up at it, especially in those trying circumstances.

If it’s just junk white rice - also ‘instant’ makes it even junkier - then all bets are off.
Only fills stomachs.

I'm pretty sure it's whatever is cheapest to make. My brother said that once in a blue moon there'll be a piece of chicken mixed in. I told him 'it's the thought that counts'.

A friend who lives in the first building to have its power restored told me that boxes with Thanksgiving dinner makings were left in the lobby last week for the tenants. Each tenant was supposed to take one box. But by the time she made it down from her 4th floor apartment to the lobby, every boxed had been opened and picked through. Some boxes only had toothbrushes left in them.

I would say that in the past, each tenant would have only taken the box left for them and not pilfered the other boxes. But, things changed in 2008 and the change was soolidified in 2012. It is now every man [woman] for themselves and heaven help the hindmost.

‘________every box had been opened and picked thru.’

I hope that info gets back to the relief workers.
You would think appropriate numbers of boxes would be brought to each floor - can it be that hard?
A little more time perhaps, but come on.

Relief agencies must think folks are on their best behavior in such a time as this.
Rather, it exposes near savagery, so to speak.

Didn’t read/see your post before posting mine, right below yours.

I get your drift, but there’s always been me first/cheaters, around. . . (I know you know that - - )

White rice is slave food. I only eat brown rice but.... This Thanksgiving I ate the white because this is what was served. 100% whole wheat is the only bread real Euro-people and survivors should be eating and is all I eat. White bread is slave food.

I make and eat serious (lost art) whole wheat bread. Might have a little rye, caraway, cumin in it

White bread is wallpaper paste!
We consume whole grains, also.
