Israeli defense forces say their anti-rocket interceptor system has taken down most of the rockets fired at the country.
JERUSALEM An abiding image of the former Israel defense minister Amir Peretz was a photograph of him peering at a military drill with the black lens caps still on his binoculars. Mr. Peretz resigned months after the 2006 war in Lebanon, which was widely regarded as a failure.
Yet on Sunday, as rockets fired by Gaza militants streaked toward Tel Aviv, Ashdod and other Israeli cities, Mr. Peretz, a resident of the rocket-battered border town of Sderot, was being hailed as a defense visionary for having had the foresight while in office to face down myriad skeptics and push for the development of Iron Dome, Israels unique anti-rocket interceptor system.
The naysayers now are few. In the five days since Israel began its fierce assault on the militant infrastructure in Hamas-run Gaza, after years of rocket fire against southern Israel, Iron Dome has successfully intercepted more than 300 rockets fired at densely populated areas, with a success rate of 80 to 90 percent, top officials said. Developed with significant American financing and undergoing its ultimate battle test, the Iron Dome system has saved many lives, protected property and proved to be a strategic game changer, experts said.
Defense Minister Ehud Barak toured a newly deployed mobile unit near Tel Aviv on Sunday and described Iron Dome as probably the most technologically impressive achievement in recent years in Israel. He called its performance almost perfect.

On Tuesday, August 9, 2011, Ambassador Daniel B. Shapiro travelled to the south of Israel for a tour of the Iron Dome Battery. He was hosted by Captain Elad Tzinman, Israeli Air Force Battery Commander, and Colonel Tzvika Chaimovitch, Israeli Air Force 167 Wing Commander. Ambassador Shapiro received a brief on the Iron Dome system and toured the Command Center. In a press statement following the tour, Ambassador Shapiro reiterated that the United States is committed to Israels security.
An Iron Dome launcher fired an interceptor rocket near the Israeli city of Ashkelon on Monday.
What if Hamas is firing duds 75% of the time forcing Israel to use up it’s stockpile of Iron Dome Anti-Missile missles?
I sure hope the Israelis are well supplied.
The total restraint of Israel just amazes me. Any other country would have bombed the hell out of their antagonist by now. And yet the world criticizes Israel for defending themselves.
I wish they could stop jihadis by flinging another jihadi at them.
Then I could post an article about how they’ve learned to “Stop a moslem with a moslem.”
Was it the Sprint interceptor missile?
It hits Mach 5 in a few seconds and glows white as it races toward its target.
Lend Lease a squadron of B-52s to the Israelis and Gaza could be flattened in a matter of hours!
Nuke subs would settle the mater in short odder without airborne participation. Just a thought from the sidelines.
The NYT buried this story on page A9.
Ha,, stop a rocket with a rocket? EVERYONE knows thats impossible. And Reagan was stupid for thinking it could be done! Remember?
I’ll ask him, not sure.
“In the five days since Israel began its fierce assault on the militant infrastructure in Hamas-run Gaza, after years of rocket fire against southern Israel, Iron Dome has successfully intercepted more than 300 rockets fired at densely populated areas, with a success rate of 80 to 90 percent, top officials said.” A quote from the article. There is always an angle with the NY Slime-—and it is always rarely (read “never”) on the correct side of the issue. Why anyone takes them seriously is beyond me. What is this “militant” nonsense? Say what it is, terrorists, killers of civilians, or just plain murderers of children. Enough of the euphemisms; George Orwell would laugh in envy of their “newspeak.”
Yet another example of Jewish brain power at work. :-)
The best way to stop incoming ICBMs is a system somewhat like Iron Dome but have the interceptors carrying nuclear payloads. This is very probably what Israel has to intercept Iranian missile launches. It’s what the Russian system uses.
About the lens caps.
When B Clinton did the same at Korean DMZ didn’t ‘they’ convince us they were one way glass and the facing was fake?
“My dad worked on a missile crew in the Marshall Islands back in the 1960s. He said even back then they could hit a rocket with a rocket and had done it. (shhh, its a secret)”
Yea, someone told Reagan, and the Soviets. About the only people that didn’t know this secret was the Democrats, who kept screaming that it can’t work.
...of course the Democrats KNEW that it would work, which is what is so scary about them.
