As we head into the Thanksgiving weekend, thousands of families in the northeast face a difficult holiday season. For those still reeling from the effects of Superstorm Sandy, emotions are still raw and futures are uncertain. Reuters photographer Mike Segar visited Staten Island last week, spending time with residents hard-hit by Sandy. He collected not just their portraits but their stories, as they stood amid the wreckage of what had been their homes, businesses, and places of worship. While there was anger and sadness on display, there was also a sense of gratitude for the outpouring of help from afar, and the groundswell of support from friends and neighbors.

Where have you been, for crying out loud?
Kart DID speak out! Where were you?
Sure, they bitch and complain like New Yorkers do, but the people here are resilient and are taking this devastation in stride, not waiting to be rescued but rolling up sleeves and getting to work to rebuild.
You're preaching at the WRONG person.
Kart and others have been fighting an undending battle against those FRINOS who have been doing that very thing against the victims of Hurricane Sandy due to the simple fact that they live in NY, a *GASP* ***BLUE*** state.
They got what they deserved, dontcha know?
You come here on HIS thread and tell him to take a hike?!?!?!
Really????
If you don't like it, don't click on the link to his thread and read it.
Kartographer did. Between the naysayers before the storm, trying to say it wasn't goint to be bad up to and even during the worst of the storm, and the "Let 'em suffer, they're from blue states" folks afterwards, Kartographer was the one pushing back against them the hardest.
Pretty sad state of affairs that folks's hearts can be so hardened, but unfortunately that happens a lot with internet discourse, and it just keeps getting worse with each passing year.
My client is based in Northern New Jersey and some of their employees I work with didn't have power for nearly three weeks - at a time of year where that can be more than just uncomfortable. And they got off easy compared to what a lot of folks along the coast are going through.
What Kartographer said was true - I’ve seen may posts about how the Sandy victims can suck eggs and there have been stated hopes they really suffer. After going through Katrina, I wouldn’t wish even the worst Democrat ill above and beyond what Mother Nature has already provided. It demeans us all on FR when folks make bile-laden posts because they can’t ever get politics out of it and put humanity into it - it makes us sound as rabid as the Dims on DU.
perhaps you’re right
I agree with others here. You’re FOS.
I didn't think it appropriate to liken posters at FR to those at DU, that was my concern and I would never make inappropriate posts about anyone being devastated due to any disaster.
As our posts continued I lost my temper and I'm sorry it happened.
If you'll accept A Happy Thanksgiving wish from me it's offered.
Consider the matter forgotten.
I myself got more than a little heated, but I hate a cover up and I felt that something that was truly ugly needed to be brought to FReepers attention in hope that it would not happen again.
As I posted more than once:
“I thought we are better than that. I know we should be better than that. But after hearing so many defend this behavior I am no longer sure that we can be better than that.”
Now let me thank you! You help bring my pastors weekly message to life as he taught this week on:
Ephesians 4:32 ‘Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”
So you test me and what can I do but forgive and forget. As I said consider the matter forgotten.
I fully understand your meaning now which I should have picked up on last night.
The volunteers got overwhelmed by the volume of clothing that was first donated, but have now become more organized. I am told one VFW post has department store racks set up so people don’t have to rummage through black plastic bags.
There was a call for baby supplies and for clean up supplies. I am not sure of who needs what now.
Your idea of contacting the Parishes most heavily afffected is brilliant. On Staten Island, they are the Parishes closest to the beaches on the south shore, from South Beach to Great Kills. I am FreepMailing you the contact info of the Churches. They can advise what is most needed, and where to send it.
Thank you and peace be with you.
I do not know the contact info for the Churches or other institutions in the Rockaways, Breezy Point, Nassau County or the Jersey Shore, but perhaps Freepers familiar with those neighborhods might have some contact info.
No worries, Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family, jazusamo. I am used to seeing lots of blanket political statements about people living in ‘blue’ states, but some of those posts were shockingly callous and nasty.
I agree. I also agree with the original thoughts behind Kart's comments - I too was on a number of those threads (until my power went out) and was repeatedly called a liar, which was bad enough but I was a liar FOR Obama - and I reported any number of those type comments, as did many others.
I couldn't go back to those threads as they had disturbed me so much, I couldn't believe some of what I was reading, plus there was a lot of work to do here in VA and I didn't have the time or interest in getting into cat fights with people who weren't facing what those in my community, or elsewhere, were facing.
Daily, friends in NYC are still posting on FB updates about various communities including Staten Island, Breezy, Rockaway, parts of Brooklyn, etc.
No offense taken. It never happened.
Happy Thanksgiving to you as well and God’s gracious blessing on you and your family.
People are angry and looking for someone to blame. I was treated pretty rudely because I cast my NYS throwaway vote for president for a third party candidate as a protest vote.
No way obama was not taking NY. It's to heavily blue and I'm used to my vote for president never counting so I had that luxury. And I still got shredded for it.
People who weren't prepared and were whining because Uncle Handout didn't come through as they expected or demanded have no one to blame but themselves, but only in regard to not preparing, not simply because they live in a blue state which somehow means to some that they *deserved* it.
What many people either forget or don't know is that God has established all authority on the earth. If obama got re-elected, there IS a purpose for it, it was no surprise to God and He can use even that for our ultimate good, if we let Him.
I understand about your vote, not you being attacked though.. Romney had a chance here in VA - so while he wasn’t my first choice, he did get my vote.
What I didn’t understand was the attacks on folks like me who were just reporting conditions in our neck of the woods. Being told I was shilling for an Obama government agency as I was watching the water creep closer to the house than it ever has before was not exactly something I took kindly to and that was before the worst of the storm had yet to hit us and was just starting to pound the Jersey Shore. It was ugly and hurtful and so totally uncalled for.
I hope you are having a blessed Thanksgiving.
We had one poster (probably the one berating you) going from thread to thread saying everyone on FR was falling for the MSM gambit to overplay the storm.
The problem was, the storm was not being overplayed. And the public needed to be aware that something serious was coming. Too many were of the mindset of some posters here, that Sandy was just a mere Cat 1 and therefore not going to live up to the hype.
