A little perspective on Jack Taylor’s performance:
He made 52 of 108 from the field (48%). Of those, he was 27 - 71 from the 3 point line (38%) and was 7 - 10 from the free throw line.
David Larsen...playing for the losing team, scored 70 points. He was 33 - 44 from the field (75%). With 3 free throws.
The old record of 113 points was held by Bevo Francis.
In his game he was: 38 - 46 from the field (82%) and 37 -39 from the free throw line. (No 3 pointers in his day). Oh, Bevo also pulled down 24 rebounds in that game.
I guess if you are going to take 108 shots in a game (more than double what Bevo had), you are probably going to set a record.
Good point. Back in those days, there was no three point line; the coach would tear you a new one for taking a long shot like that. All Bevo's shots were lay ups, dunks, short jump shots or hooks. He was a dominating offensive and defensive player.
“I guess if you are going to take 108 shots in a game (more than double what Bevo had), you are probably going to set a record.”
Way back when I played at that level if he was that big a ball hog that he would take 108 shots, we would not have cared if his coach and teammates were ok with it, he would have been getting up off the floor about 100 times. That BS would not stand. He would have had a better chance of getting hurt than setting a record. It’s a team game. Pass the ball jackass!
