I highly recommend shopping at your local hardware store to get some high test nylon tie straps. Don’t be satisfied with the smaller test types, go for at least 100 lb. test.
Put one on each wrist or ankle, and use a third to tie the two together, and whoever is going to be incapacitated.
There are times and places where you just don’t want to double tap, so you need a strong backup.
In the state of Washington it is very clear that a burglar in your home can be shot with no questions asked. Heck, a few months ago some shop-keeper kept getting robbed so he started sleeping in his shop. Some kids broke in and in the midst of grabbing stuff the guy jumped out with his shotgun. The kids took off - he shot and killed one 50 feet from the shop - a few leather belts (or similar)that he had just stolen found by his body. Found not guilty. Although the last I heard the parents are looking into a civil penalty against the guy.
I sure hope this burglar can’t use some defense like “unlawful imprisonment” or something. I wonder if you said “I am making a citizen’s arrest” might help!? I would imagine catching a guy and detaining him while you call and wait for the cops is one thing. Tossing him into the cellar for a few days is another.
