No analogy is ever perfect, but having worked in an inner city school for a year and a half and having done all of my student teaching in one as well, it is not a big of a stretch as you might imagine.
Several times I had to break up fights with students carrying weapons, and I was threatened with assault on two occasions, once with a weapon. We also had several drive by shootings one during school hours.
Your last paragraph is exactly what I was talking about. The reward is not worth the danger. And then you have to follow the lesson plan and teach what the state tells you to teach when you could be shanked walking to your car. You gotta’ love what you do, I guess.
And I think we’re calling a hero by the wrong name. It’s not “Terry”. It’s “Tyrone”. Right?
