My first American born ancestor (1653) was born in W. Virginia. I’ll give your suggestion serious thought.
Your first American born ancestor was born in Virginia. West Virginia didn’t exist until the Civil War era, and even Kentucky didn’t exist until after the Revolutionary War. Both were Virginia at that time. Same with Tennessee until 1796. It was North Carolina before then.
It’s unusual to have a European ancestor born that far into the backcountry that early, btw. The Scotch-Irish largely settled the Shenandoah Valley and beyond into the Appalachians, as far as Virginia is concerned. They didn’t begin turning up in large numbers until the 1700’s.
Was he a trapper or maybe the child of an indian fighter and a native woman? Sounds peculiar but it happened more frequently than most realize.
